I want a 2TB portable external hard drive.

I should be able to use the portable with my desktop until I transfer to a laptop, shouldn't I?

Never had a problem with the Western Digital "My Passport" range. As for a good deal I cannot suggest anything as I m in the UK, but Amazon has had some great offers over here so perhaps it is the same on the other side of the pond?

I have 2 of the My Book Western Digital brand that I have been using for several years and neither of these have given me any problems at all. I do a lot of shopping on Amazon but I can't say if they have the best prices on hard drives but usually on other products, they do for me. Good Luck!

Stay away from Iomega. Last year I needed one quick so my local Radio Shack, which is open at night, was selling Iomegas. It failed after 7 months. The Iomega forum,at the time, was loaded with pages of complaints about the same issue.

I've had good service from fry's,that same harddrive can be found here:

Not sure about the need for fans with the 2.5 external drives.I own a few WD passports and they go into a 'sleep' mode after a few minutes of inactivity. hope this helps.
