A woman this year got scammed a couple months back at a gas station. She thought she was buying an iPad, when it fact it was a mirror with a iPad skin applied to the surface. She didn't check her purchase until she got home. So yes, stupidity is alive an well. Make sense these things happen. Consumers have pretty much been groomed to pass through life in cruise control, taking only ample notice of hype-words like: cloud and water-proof. The majority of users probably could probably describe the association they made with the term, but fail to piece together how exactly that "feature" is suppose to work. So I think these types of mistakes are common, even if they fail to get reported. There is also the issue of denial. Fan-boys in particular will defend a product, even if recent revelations show the product a flop. Why? They feel shamed to admit they are wrong. They have already made significant investment in the product and its associated services. I'm sure we can think of other reasons, but it's a not a far stretch to see these same users defending the mistake with an argument like, "It probably didn't install right" or "It's because the update only works on the iPhone 5s, not my iPhone 5". This type of stupid exists everywhere. Regardless of product or service.

Kinda reminds me of when I got back home & tiredly took a long bath. I forgot to take my waterproof watch off before I got into the bath. I reasoned that it was waterproof after all & should stand a bathtub full of water. After I got out off the bath the LCD display screen on the watch was blank. Well, it did only cost about three quid from a petrol station. Ever since I've never trusted anything electrical that claims to be 'waterproof'.

Not so sure what to feel for those who fell for the trick. If it's a non-techie grandma, I can understand but if it's a typical dude, I'm not gonna give him the benefit of doubt.

That being said, who's gonna sponsor an iPhone for me to test this? :p

Don't. Empathy is good but you're exaggerating a bit.
Buddha teaches folks to "end their suffering through the elimination of ignorance by way of understanding".
If I'd believe it, pure karma I'd say.
    Effin' hilarious.

I thinks it's funny seeing the reports of angry tweets from people who found out the hard way that their precious iPhones were not actually waterproof. It makes them look pretty stupid in my option for them to admit to falling for this.

So you think it's funny only because they are iPhone users?

I wondering since you already made a similar comment in this thread.

No - I think it's funny because they are admitting to falling for it and wrecking their phones in the process. If it was me, I would not want to tell the world about it.

My comment was based on the fact that a lot of iPhone users own an iPhone simply because it is the "in thing to do" - they have not gone out and tried to find the best phone, they just went straight for the iPhone like sheep so they can be "cool" like other iPhone users.

They are surely ~ Snipped as per TOS ~ wich is one of the reasons they "share" and talks about it if you will, and probably by doing this, it increases the chance for others to find out about it and prevent others from falling for it.

I see. Well the reason for getting an iPhone can be many including the one you mention, but also that they like the size, the OS, the hardware, they own and use other Apple devices and services that the phone will connect to seamlessly etc etc...:)

No argument from me about that, and they are all very good reasons for owning and iPhone instead of Android based phone or another kind of phone. I was certainly not referring to people who purchased an iPhone for these reasons. Just the ones who opted for an iPhone solely because it is an iPhone.

I was concerned enough about this story to forward it to everyone at work. Never underestimate that people won't think the story sounds reasonable enough to be true. :(
