What is your favorite forum software, be it in terms about security, stability, ease of use, personal preference, etc. You may give your opinion as an administrator/forum owner, forum staff, a user, or just plain lurking the forums which use certain forum software. Multiple choice is allowed, and let's ignore the fact that WSF is using vBulletin. Just pick your favorite and tell us why?
i am the admin of a myBB forum. My choice was due to: 1. free. I was looking for a free software because this forum is quite small (about 100 users). 2. Highly customizable. Before going to myBB i tried also PhpBB, but at the end after reading some reviews here and there I made up my mind. I've heard good things also about SMF but I did not like the look.
Yeah, so many bad reviews about phpBB. It's pretty fancy though. Editing usergroup's permissions is rather annoying in SMF. Personally, I found it to be clunky.
I had a great time with those forums, lots of activity back when i was in high school. We used to discuss homeworks, post random crap etc.
Used various over the years been an admin on various vBulletin boards, I remember them being fiddly to customise, but no real problems. I used to part own a large Invision (premium) powered board, we got great support and one reason we went with them was the at the time better customisation options for what we needed and had better load balancing support. Never used phpBB due to continuous stream of security breaches - the code was horrid years ago (though it got a lot better after a rewrite). SMF has always been a great and reliable option for small and simple forums, have setup various ones over the years for people and is my default choice I recommend to others for standalone forum if it meets requirements. Ah? Not sure about it since I heard it's more into a blog software and content management. Maybe if you find it comparable to the others.
