I don't know why, but setting rule for svchost (wuauserv) is not enough. Windows Update is trying to connect to IP address in this IP range (157.56.0.0/16).

So, I created new rule like this:

    http://i.imgur.com/Fa5kQ31.png

And Win 8.1 Update now works

EDIT: I am not sure if this really works for installing updates, but I can confirm this rule makes the update check not to fail.

Thank you for your feedback. I will check this and add it to the next version in the recommended rules.
Are you able to play some video or just the first page of YouTube is loading ? Maybe it is from the browser cache. Can you check this ? Are you using Avast WebShield, Avira WebGuard or any NDIS filter ?

At the moment using only Windows firewall and windows defender, and nope it not using cache because i have tested also using the private window mode and yes videos are playing.

    1. How does the block rule for Firefox look like ? Do you have a rule that blocks all protocols, all ports, all remote IP addresses for firefox.exe ? And still Firefox can connect over the blocking rule ?
    2. Does this happen only with Firefox or with other programs too ?
    3. The path from the rule is the same as the one from where firefox.exe runs ? Windows Firewall rules are applied per path basis. If you run the same executable file from different locations, different rules must be created.
    4. Do you use Firefox from Program Files folder or do you have some portable version that runs from different locations from the temp folder ?
    5. What profile do you use in WFC ?

Windows Firewall Control v.4.0.2.0 - New version

    What's new:
    - New: Description column was added in the Manage Rules data grid and Local Addresses column into the Recently Blocked data grid. These two are initially hidden and must be enabled from the data grid header context menu. (Robereyewhy)
    - New: A new checkbox was added in the Uninstall dialog to let the user choose if he wants to disable Windows Firewall logging at uninstallation. (SwissBIT)
    - New: A new confirmation dialog was added when the user presses on the Clear log button in Recently Blocked window. (Goobasa)
    - New: Columns size is now saved when the user closes Manage Rules window and then reloaded at reopening of the view. This applies to Manage Rules and Recently Blocked.
    - Fixed: Temporary Rules that have an expiry time are deleted immediately after they are created on non en-US versions of Windows. I was finally able to find the problem and fix it on a dutch Windows 7 machine.
    - Fixed: "WFC - Windows Store (svchost.exe)" rule does not work as expected when the service is set to WSService. The rule was updated to properly allow the connections to Windows Store on Windows 8 machines. (MrElectifyer)
    - Fixed: Notifications for "System" are displayed even if there is a block rule thatdenies this. "System" is not included in the rules defined for All programs. (SwissBIT)
    - Removed: Registry Editor and Command Prompt were removed from the Tools tab. The CMD window that was started from that shortcut had no scrolling bar so if the user executed a command with a large output, the window can't be scrolled up to see the results. (SwissBIT)

Installation notes: Just use the updater to update to the new files. That's all.

The language file format was updated and probably some strings will not match in the user interface. Please use the English translation file as a reference to see how it should look like. Some IDs are new, some are changed. Currently, only the following translation files are updated: EN, RO, BR, CZ, GR, DE, JP, FR, SV, ES, HU.

    Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you for your support and your feedback,
    The developer ;)

@SwissBIT - About the problem you have reported here, I can't do anything about it. As you already tested, even WFwAS does not accept such input. You must define them one by one. I tried several approaches but in the end it seems to be a bug in Windows Firewall API which does not accept multiple CIDR entries. Even if I pass multiple parameters, it will take only the first one. If, let's say you define multiple CIDR entries through WFwAS, when I retrieve them through the Windows Firewall API, it returns again, only the first. So, even if I add support for multiple entries in WFC, the API won't allow me to pass and save multiple entries. Also, I can't retrieve multiple items. The API will return only the first entry and good bye. I will write about this limitation to Microsoft.

P.S. Please let me now if the reported bugs are fixed in this version.

Is it possible to develop a 'show connections' window for this (similar to others currently available i.e. WFN and TinyWall) ?
I am currently having to use a 3rd party tool: TCPView to achieve this.
Would certainly make this software more complete :)

Thaks for the awesome update! Updated effortlessly and everything (including the recommended rules) appears to be working flawlessly :D

Uhm, mind elaborating on what you mean by "slow connections" window? Doesn't sound like that's the job of a firewall and wouldn't want WFC getting bloated...

    @MrElectrifyer

You requsted i explain myself ?
Here to Elaborate on show connections option, not slow :p
Not the job of a firewall ?
I disagree here, always very useful to see a firewall's connections.

Oh, must have been half-asleep when I read that :p Sounds like it could be a "Recently Allowed" connections section in the Manage Rules window...

WFC does not show the active network connections. From the Tools tab you can launch Resource Monitor (integrated in Windows) and this one has a tab named Network. There you can find all the active network connections and a lot more. There is no need to implement in WFC something that already exists and is implemented better.

There was a view with the "Active Network Connections" prior to version 3.1.0.0., but I have removed it due to the slow performance. I will think about this feature.

from version 3 to 4: uninstall version 3, install version 4: impossible to activate. The button activate remains disabled. Urgent; please help. All these updates problems are a nightmare. Now i have -nearly- no firewall....By the way, i am a registered owner.

I'd be interested to learn what antivirus software other people are using with the windows firewall. Kaspersky is obviously out, given that it operates like a proxy and overrides the firewall settings. Is WindowsDefender good enough?
