I would imagine if it ever did take off then it would be hit by so many patent lawsuits from Microsoft they wouldn't know what day of the week it is.

i've used Windows since before Win 95.
we used to play Microsoft Flight Simulator with one frame every 2 seconds and we were happy with that. ;)

anyway, to get back on topic.
i have skinned my OS since at least XP.

unlike a lot of Linux distros, Windows always had the bare minimum when it comes to skinning the OS.

if you want to make Windows look pretty, you gotta use some 3rd party apps for that, either paid or free.

one such good free app is UxStyle:
    http://uxstyle.com/

i use WindowBlinds but it is a commercial product.

React OS can never give any competition to MS.

ReactOS 0.3.15 would not install on my computer; this was only a few days ago.
I kept getting error messages about incompatibility with an existing operating system that didn't exist.
The hard drive had just been securely wiped with PartImage.
Less than 30 minutes later, I installed PCLinux Full Monty on that same drive without incident.

Although there are older versions, 0.3.15 is the only one I tried and is described as 'Alpha'. The zip file was downloaded from Sourceforge, extracted, and the ISO was burned to CD using Imgburn..

The ReactOS project is what- 13 years old- and being no further along than this makes me think it's a waste of time, at least it is for me.
If I am to give any OS consideration, it should at least be capable of properly installing.

Admittedly not many, but there are still people using it and the point being that when support stops for a particular OS life goes on as usual. I have 3 machines with XP which I use mainly with my printer and scanner (I couldn't find drivers that would allow my Vista and Win 8 to connect with those devices).

"DirectX 11.2 Exclusive to Windows 8.1 and Xbox One"

    http://www.techpowerup.com/186671/directx-11-2-exclusive-to-windows-8-1-and-xbox-one.html

I just built a new gaming computer to replace my 5 year old XP PC. I had a copy of Windows 7 and 8. I really wanted to install 7 but was told to install 8 because of DX 11.2. Did I really have much of a choice since I was building a new gaming PC? Would it have made sense for me to go with Windows 7?

Sorry for the off topic but I wanted to let you know why I didn't have much of a choice. I also have no interest in keeping my data in the cloud so this may be my last gaming PC. I may need to go with a Sony console if I want to continue gaming in the future.

That's the only thing I was interested in and it caught my attention and I made it bold in my quote, but later you changed your mind and said that not so many use Win98, no biggie, I was just curious where all those Win98 users were in the world. :D
So there was no need to start talking about Mercedes and the other stuff :)
My point was, no doubt that some people are still using Win98 but they are not that many ;) :thumb:

Yeah because if anything, Sony have clearly shown how competent they are about securing user data, right..? How about keeping their online services running so that users can actually access them? No, lots of downtime there too. That's ignoring the whole PCs being more powerful and more flexible than consoles arguments.

What you should do is buy a locked down console where Sony sets the rules for everything you're allowed to do, that'll teach Microsoft over Windows 10 rumours that may or may not be true...

FYI, it is highly unlikely that any games will be made DX11.2 only for the PC for the foreseeable future, if past experience about DX adoption has taught anyone anything.

Compared to how many using Linux I wonder?

    Except for security updates?

Yes, the GPU is described as being equivalent in feature set to DX 11.2+. Basically, that doesn't mean a lot because OpenGL compliance follows different rules than DirectX. For example, OpenGL 4.4 offers nearly the same feature set as DirectX 11.2, works on Windows XP and works fully on hardware that reportedly does not support the full feature set of DirectX 11.2 (e.g. NVIDIA 500/600/700 series).

I wouldn't have any important data stored on the console and certainly wouldn't give them a credit card number. You can also buy Playstation Network cards if you want to buy games, dlc, etc.

I would also have a 2nd linux machine for surfing, shopping, etc. I will not keep my data in the cloud for MS, corporations, hackers and the NSA to rummage though. It's not going to happen end of discussion.

The rumor sounds fairly plausible considering Windows 8 has MS accounts and skydrive. I also don't feel comfortable with 8 or the android tablet I've been playing with so I'll be heading in another direction in the future.

Since we're talking for APU's here then yes the system is capable for DX11.2+

Oh, ok. I guess my XP pc is DX11 capable since I have a DX11 capable GPU in it. :p

Unless the system can use the DX 11.2 api, then it's not 11.2 capable, regardless of the GPU or APU. That is unless you decide you want to try and install Windows 8.1 onto your PS4 console. I doubt that's even possible.

Of course I don't keep up with consoles that much. I'm assuming that the Xbox is the only console that's using DirectX as it's graphics api, and that Sony is using something else. Perhaps based off of OpenGL?

The PS4 has all the feature set (Plus extended features) of both the DX11.2+ & Opengl 4.4 so in that sense and since we're talking here for not a traditional system but an advanced GPCPU/hUMA custom design that uses a Low-level (Close to Metal) API then yes, you can call it a DX11.2+ capable SYSTEM.

To the topic: Bringing back Aero in Win 9 means pretty much nothing right now. That may not have any more significance than a start button with no menu. :D

If I update, it will probably be on only one of our machines, used solely for windows compatible software. Other then that, I'm going to stick with my current setup as long as possible. After that I'll probably switch my primary machine over to Linux completely. I'm aware that boot-loaders are available to workaround the metro UI, but it's my understand that this approach isn't perfect. So at this point, I'm not considering this a viable solution.

Hi, I am ReactOS project member.
Could you kindly retry with one from here https://www.reactos.org/getbuilds
Because for some reasons 0.3.15 version was already outdated on arrival. And I ask you to provide information about your PC configuration.

Thanks, I didn't know about this software. Using this along with Classic Shell and the Stardock app to enable "modern" (metro) apps to run in a window largely restores the desktop.

this (Aero Glass) does indeed make Windows 8 look much nicer than the standard ugly flat square look.

I like Aero since it was introduced in Vista. If Win9 brings it back, I'll consider that good news.
