So in an effort to compete with the 7z format they've scrapped all backwards compatibility which is really the holy grail of any compression format, popularity. Ingenious idea...

Well, I guess the benchmarks will speak for themselves.

not exactly. before they offered rar and zip formats, now they offer rar, rar5 and zip formats. so if you need compatibility, just use the old rar format.

Thats correct, backwards compatibility is perfectly ensured. The OP has probably misunderstood the "whats new" text. :)

Probably the case. This is no different than WinZip adding the .zipx format.

For what it's worth, when creating an archive, RAR is selected by default - not RAR5.

    3 possible options:

    1. Extract the file and then rar it again without the password.
    2. Open the archive then rightclick on the file and choose "set default password" and then enter the password, this way you will never have to enter the password again anytime you want to open the file.
    3. Create a new unprotected RAR file (e.g. containing an empty folder), then open the old protected one. Now drag the files into the new unprotected RAR. No extracting needed.

If the 10 archives have the same password yes... if you move the rar file to another PC then you need to set the default password also there. Not really clear what you want to achieve but it looks like that with only 10 files it simpler to just drag them into a new rar without a password.

in short i want to convert a protected rar in a non protected rar

i was used to use option 1 and 3 but...with big or huge archive it's not the best thing

i guess winzip or 7zip can do it

Rar does not offer an option with-in the rar file as the files are fully encrypted. i.e. you need to decrypt them anyway before been able to manipulate them. If the other compressors have a serious approach to password protection then they should work the same and you will not be able simply to tag one file with or without the password they will need still to decrypt on-the-fly and recompress the unecrypted file (that will lead to a lot of CPU/RAM usage). I am afraid its by design and I would be worried, security wise, if the contrary was possible. :)
