AVG AntiVirus Free 2014

I see AVG AntiVirus Free 2014 is out, from the AVG servers. Can be downloaded now.

Not a great deal of new features though. Improved protection, file shredder in Internet Security 2014 and so on?

 

Drive update is new ... anything else?

 

Driver update isn't new. It's just an upsell to another product

 

All they added was a file shredder...

That's the most ridiculous changelog I've ever seen.

 

hahaha wow. thats some changelog for what normally is a MAJOR version upgrade. i mean those changes i could see in a minor update

 

If they only stop addding garbage to the antivirus program. I mean c'mon, driver updater? What's next, news feed manager for news related to fast food?

One thing is Software Updater that avast! has and is related to security since it's meant to keep important and often exposed software up to date. What do up to date drivers improve? Nothing. It just makes problems because frankly all the driver updaters are one big pile of garbage and they only cause problems.

Also this has to be the lamest changelog for a new major release that i've ever seen. Only one with such unimpressive changelogs is F-Prot for which i don't think anyone still cares anymore. So AVG, make some hype with describing what new you offer with v2014, because just saying "Improved protection" means nothing. It's like saying we improved the performance of the car. In what way? Acceleration performance, top speed, grip, steering, engine noise, comfort? What!? Just saying "improved protection" doesn't tell us in what way.

You cant choose a AV on the word "stability" and knock other competitors out,it wouldnt cut it,my opinion!

AVG detection rates have gone down since years,so how can you call it "very reliable".

Who are you trying to pin down with highlighting the word "stable" avast I guess from what I have read of your previous replies?? Sorry,if that is the case I call it a assumption on your side because you havent given the later builts of avast a go.

Also,looking at some replies of yours before,it sounds you like to have kick at other free AV's which are very effective except your comodo,if that is so,better go back to your fanboy den

I wouldn't say AVG is bad. It did pretty good in latest tests and in general it works quite well. But it also has moments of extreme idiocity. Like all the non security related crap they push through it and one update per 24 hours and stupid ads everywhere. And critical false positives that happen too often with them.

Avg really need to go back to the drawing board and rewrite their product from scratch. firstly they bolted on products they brought from other security vendors and then they added tons of gimmicks not even related to security.

 

Yeah.. that's usually when everyone finally quits using a product like this....

 

How are any of you guys getting this free version to even work? During the install it tries to get you to choose a paid version. There is an option to choose the "Basic" version which is supposed to be the free one. Then after that it gives you an activation key. Why the hell an activation key for a free version. Then after the install is done an error message pops up saying the activation key is invalid (the same damn key it gave earlier). At this point the only option is to close the program making this version totally non functional (every time you try to open the interface that message pops back up). Every download I've seen is the same version number. Anyone actually got this to work, I'd like to know how you did it. To make matters worse it seems all 2013 free versions have been pulled from the net. All links to 2013 versions go to this same 2014 version. I'm not too impressed with AVG right now after this crap.

Automatic updates every 4 hours would be more important than mega file super shredder registry booster.

 

The measure of a quality AV is how well it protects one's system against the myriad number of threats out there. To that end, in my own personal experience AVG ranks with top tier AVs in doing a superb job. Is it the best? Others have shown better detection rates in lab tests, but where it really counts in the real world AVG holds it own with the best. Nothing has ever infiltrated my system with AVG on the frontline in tandem with Privatefirewall. As for stability, AVG has been much more stable for users over the past 2 yrs than Avast. I ought to know because I switched from Avast to AVG for that very reason. You obviously don't like AVG; to each his own. But your characterization of AVG as a garbage AV is both ludicrous and disingenuous.

 

There is always going to be comments like this between users about what is good and what is not. Personally I think they are all about the same, it just comes down to the user interface for me, what works best with how I use it and interact with it. Hell people are still bashing Norton from years ago when their program was really bloated. Norton is quite good and compact now, I used it a couple of years until I got tired of buying the yearly subscriptions. For me I just don't want to pay for an antivirus program anymore so now I go with the free ones. The frees ones give me enough protection along with using SpywareBlaster and Malwarebytes. I don't need all the bells and whistles and bloat of a paid antivirus or suite. AVG has worked well for me. My issue with it is AVG is not always forthright with what they put out concerning their free versions. My daughter was using what I thought was AVG 2013 free and then all of a sudden months later it started saying no more virus updates until she bought a subscription. Then when trying to change it to what AVG says is their 2014 Free version I get that activation failed crap after install (went through 3 install tries and 3 reboots with same result) which forced me to go with Avast Free version that actually worked. To me that's deceptive business practices and I don't care for it. Even though for me the 2013 free version is working fine, I don't know if I'm going to stay with AVG after that 2014 free version crap I went through.

 

I've seen a number of comments, mostly on CNET, about that issue, but I haven't experience anything like that since I made the switch. My only peeve with AVG, to date, is their Surf Shield ad campaign which they sneakily install with signature updates. I complained to them about it because if I wanted the full Surf Shield features beyond the basic Link Scanner I would've added it during the initial AVG installation. I don't need them adding it without my consent/approval.

 

Are they still insisting with 1 update check per 24 hours in version 2014? Because if they are, that's just ridiculous...

 

Is it important?
That depends on how long you are on the internet for.

If you browse all day long over varying websites then more frequent updates might be an issue but even then they are still playing catch up.

 

AFAIK you can press "update" manually at any frequency.

 

You can add this process in the task scheduler - avgmfapx.exe
This process is responsible for updates.
