Serious problem - just overwrote an active partition- need it back urgently

Hi Folks
Bad news here. I thought I would do a backup and used the One Button Copy Disk command thinking it would copy to a previous backup. It didnt. It copied and overwrote an active partition on a separate drive. Now all data I have been building up drive 2 is overwritten by four new partitions. It was supposed to copy my C (boot) and three other partitions of drive 1 to another drive. So in place of my valuable video files are backups of the boot partition etc.

When I look in Paragon the drive 2 overwritten just says its a basic hard disk 1 (ATA Toshiba DT01ACA3 SCSI Disk Device) and there would appear to be nothing on it. It also does not have a drive letter associated.

When I look on EaseUS Partition Master Pro Edition v9.2.2 I can see it all as Disk 2 with 4 active partitions and an unallocated space of 2TB.

Can I get my previous partition back intact with all video files?

I used Paragon Backup & Recovery version 10, build 10815 (22.09.10 ) Suite to do the copy.

If ever there was a time I needed some help on a forum it's now.

I wont touch the drive till I hear.

This is an idea. I think you should do nothing before considering several options.

Delete all the partitions and use a file recovery program such as Recuva or O&O DiskRecovery to try to recover some files.

 

I think you are in big trouble. I would try recovery programs but anything that was actually over-written with new data is gone unless you have friends in a gov't organization like the CIA.

Programs that allow you to get back data after doing things like a format or even a repartition work because these things only setup tables and don't actually overwrite many sectors on the disk.

Ok Im listeining, and thanks...so what about this info-

I had 2 partitions only on drive 2. The video files were on one and the other (1 Tb) was unallocated cos I couldn't get it to allocate since it is a 3 terra drive.
Now, after the Paragon mess, there are 4 partitions according to EaseUS. In Paragon there is no visual clue - it indicates the partitions dont exist.

What does P2V Restore mean in Paragon B&R suite 10 mean.

Asking the obvious but does Paragon have some sort of UNDO or Recovery tools.

 

P2V is for creating a virtual disk from a physical one and won't help you. I think it stands for Physical to Virtual.

There are no undo or recovery tools. Normal undo schemes work by using a mechanism that records the original and any changes to it. If a 25GB image was restored there would be 25GB of "undo data" that would need to be stored somewhere which would take a lot of time and space.

Your problem is beyond any standard "view and modify" partition software that assumes all is well and you just want to change the disk partition layout and copy the data as necessary. You need to be looking at data recovery tools which often have trial versions that will show you what they might get back for you.

 

Perhaps you try a partition recovery tool. If it finds the original structure, you may be ok.

 

Ive taken the advice and got R-Studio 32 for recovery. HAd a go last night and was kidding myself that I could handle it so I'm putting this problem and others in the hands of a pro.

One thing of interst -
When I got this 3 terra Toshiba 7200 sata I soon found out win32 cant handle anything over 2 terra with a MBR and that there is GPT so I get all 3 terra usage. Tried that and I couldn't get it to work...so...I ended up reformatting back to MBR and made a partition of 2 terra.

The little hope I have of getting back my files is this - seems Paragon Backup & Recovery MAY have chosen to make the 4 new partitions - cloned from the disk C/boot is on, to the unallocated space on the three terra - and those 4 partitions amount to 400 Gb. There is an unallocated section on the 3 terra that is 2 terra. Im hoping that the pro shop will 1. examine the clones to see if there is anything of my lost files. 2. If there is no evidence there, Im thinking we delete the cloned partitions, wiping the space out so that we can then give the 2 terra space a drive letter. Im wondering if all my data might still be intact on that space by doing it that way. The 2 terra,which had 740Gb of data on it may stilll be there. Maybe a coincidence but when I used to R-Studio to check the drive, it sees that there is 740Gb of "stuff" on the unallocated space....Here's hoping. I'll let you know

 

Good luck and if your files are on the part that is now unallocated you should have a chance of getting them back.
