At first I thought you where talking about Windows Applocker for a Win8 tablet, but then I saw Android and was confused. I can't wait to get my first Android phone (GS4) soon and tweak it to all heck. What do you recommend for basic security until I get more familiar with Android? I was just going to install Avast! but I'm open to other options.

Added Hitman Pro alert to to the mix. Nice and light.

 

On a non-rooted Android, you simply run as (equivalent) limited user. Configurate your system to install from safe places only (e.g. Google Store) and unlock your screen with a password/swipe codecae. Install Applocker to force a password/swipe code when you want to change yor system settings or open AppStore type of applications. This prevents your from shoot in the foot errors/accidental installation of Apps.

For advertising I use Addetector (ad pop-ups are also a source of accidental installation of apps). Dropped Bitdefender anti-theft, because it is a trial (not free foreverer), changed DrWeb for Bitdefender free (new Dr Web V8 doubles RAM usage), simply because these are single purpose applications, light on CPU and battery and free.

When you root your phone Avast has all the options including firewall. But I can live without root (admin) rights on Android and have opted for simplicity.

 

Which browser? do you ever use adblock or wot?

Just a little more... and my dream setup will be completed. Consisted of a hardened Windows 8 and OAP on chatty mode *shining eyes full of hopes*. I'm still trying to find an imaging program. Macrium Reflect seems to be a strong candidate.

OT, but I started to grow an enormous hatred towards link scanner/checker/rater. They're full of nonsense.

- Firefox with NoScript, Bluhell Firewall, BDTL and HitmanPro.Alert
Smoothly and lightly...without issue.

 

RunSafer works only for Admin account, isn't it?

 

Nice light setup. Have you considered or tried Sandboxie? Seems like it could be an excellent addition with little impact yet a great deal of additional security (imho).

 

Agreed. Sandboxie is a must have.

Yes...I agree that Sandboxie could be the fine addition for RunSafer...unfortunately I like Sandboxie not so much as classic HIPS and full LV app like WTF, SD, Returnil or TTF. RunsSafer give me possibility to work with program on very low privileges and it's enough for me for daily routines. For more "special matters" I always use WTF
RunSafer is more convinient for me...one click is enough to enable restricted rights and it can be used for every apps that I will want/need.

 

To each his own. I use sandboxie along with lowered rights for all internet facing apps. That way if something did get past the lowered rights, its still in the sandbox. On top of that I'm using HIPS and two cloud AV's. Everything is light and I still have enough protection. Maybe a little too much.

I installed it for:
- Myself (Ubuntu gnome classic)
- My mother (Ubuntu unity)
- My wife (Ubuntu gnome 3)
- Few friends (Kubuntu for one, Xfce for another one)

No more microsoft at home. I am breathing again!

Literally, RunSafer makes you run certain programs with limited privileges, much like running under SUA for the selected programs. It barely had any use on Vista onward due to UAC. Be it an admin account or a standard user account shouldn't make much difference IMO. Do note that some programs already have a built-in security feature to gain the same effect as RunSafer, so it might be not a good idea to put such programs (like Chrome for example) under RunSafer according to Fabian-san's post here.
