I have been in China for over ten years now. I will give everyone some simple advice. Always approach any product or service with great scrutiny and caution.

I have edited out my detailed experience with Qihoo product after a somewhat of a warning post from "cruel sister". I just wanted to share my real world experience with Qihoo, but I will let everyone simply use their favorite search engine to find public news of what they can expect.

It is sad we are in a world where people can't speak the truth without fear of some frivolous lawsuit. But it is what it is...

Before installing Search "Qihoo malware" and do your own research before trusting me or anyone posting on a forum.

Good luck and keep your data safe!

Libel is misrepresentation, not informing people of facts. I did edit my post to be kinder, but as I mentioned, all one needs to do is Search the Internet and they will find many reputable sources reporting what Qihoo has done. If they did not want people complaining about it, they should not have done it. Also, I have many Chinese friends who have asked me for help removing the 360 browser, which looks very like another popular browser with only the icon changed.

Speaking of lawsuits, Qihoo has filed so many frivolous suits that their recent filings are being rejected and they are losing the ones files against them.

There is no law against stating facts, not in the world I live in.

    cruelsister,
Aren't you being a bit too "Proud" of Qihoo to dismiss users complaints and concerns so casually? Karl886 was just relaying his own personal experience with Qihoo yet you start throwing out the word libel into to mix. You might want to refresh yourself with your own signature before continuing.

    Later...

    Bob

There's no English 360 browser, and if they tried pulling off anything misleading or malicious with their English products, they'd be exposed on security blogs first, be all over the news afterwards, and lastly pretty much done for as a company in the international market.

So until that happens, to us non-Chinese users, what Qihoo does in China with their Chinese products is completely irrelevant.

You are correct. It was Chinese language browser and software I used, but still made by Qihoo. And it is the same company making the English versions, so same mindset and practices can be expected. Maybe not, but I will wait and see. I know there are many people, like AVusah testing this, so if a year passes and no issue, then I might try it. But I am not going to trust the track record until I see a lot of positive testing over an extended period. There are just too many questionable reports in the news during the past year.

There are just too many free alternatives from very reputable companies with no history that I find a risk.

And I cannot say I agree that "what Qihoo does in China with their Chinese products is completely irrelevant".

I completely understand your concerns but, as I said, just because Qihoo can get away with doing certain stuff in China doesn't mean they'll try to do the same outside of it. Corporations always exploit local laws, or lack thereof, to maximize profit and eliminate competition. But only where they can.
Previously, I gave the example of IKEA, which offers great benefits and wages to employees in Sweden, whereas it pays American workers much less and offers them much fewer paid vacation days. Why? Because American labor laws suck. Same company, completely different policies.

So yeah, if you want to hold off on using this program, that's fine. But I personally cannot think of any free alternatives overall as good as this program, so I'm going to keep using it until there's any indication of it being malicious.

    Story time:D

Well,as a citizen been in China for years, too,I suggest you don't care about what Chinese(including me) said too much.Because almost everything related to China must be fuzzy and disputable. It's natural due to our traditional culture. For example,if I'm late for a date,I will say "I'm sorry. It's raining." without any other specific explanations.

Qihoo has been in dispute since it was founded.Mr Chou,CEO of Qihoo,is seen as the father of malicious softwares in China because of his 3721 toolbar. That's one of the reasons which nowadays Qihoo's competitors as well as some other people ues to criticize Qihoo. After 3721 was acquired by Yahoo,Chou found Qihoo and released 360SafeGuard to kill malicious softwares(3721 involved),claiming that he would close the Pandora's Box opened by himself.360SafeGuard has developed so much these years and plays a dominant role in personal security market. It features nearly everything from optimizing the system, downloading hotfixs,to killing unwanted softwares.Actually,360SafeGuard is far beyond 360IS in many aspects.

Some of Qihoo's products have been installed on my computer for years without any unacceptable behaviors. However,as I have mentioned above,Chinese culture is always fuzzy. For instance,When installing 360SafeGuard or 360IS,it asks for uninstalling some other security softwares for potential compatibility problems, which is also described as "unistalling competitors' softwares"by some others. It's hard to say which is right. What's more, can you believe that companies like BlueFocus can exist in China? And can you believe that Rising put its competitor Micropoint into prison by making rumors?

In my opinion,Qihoo is a challenger in the internet industry.Monopoly of Rising and paid security softwares were terminated by Qihoo.Qihoo holds the belief that the majority of users should not to be charged. That's why even the 1 to 1 service of 360SafeGuard is free, which is called 360ComputerExperts.Personally speaking,Mr Chou is the No.1 product manager in China, insisting that product should be the core of Qihoo and all the internet companies.

Finally,Qihoo is always trying to keep its reputation.Maybe it's the only company that has done following things:

publishing and updating a white paper about users' privacy:
    http://www.360.cn/privacy/v2/

letting an independent organization supervise 360's source code.

listing and responding to rumors one by one:
    http://bbs.360.cn/cms/lie.html
    http://zt.360.cn/heixiazi.html
    http://news.diandi.com/lieold.html

offering a reward up to 100,000 RMB to collect evidences of black public relations:

Yes. I hope you are correct and they keep their English Verisions clean. I just read several news reports about the Apple App Store issue and others, plus my and my friends own experience with unwanted installations, so I am forced to lean to the wait and see side...

But I have read all the good reviews here on this thread, so I will certainly keep an eye on it. I would love to have such a lite suite with triple engines!

Just have learned through experience to be cautious of any gift horse. ;)

    @lovpsm

Thank you for the detailed background. I have used the Rising products, too. A lot of unwanted issues with it on my computer. Qihoo is better, certainly.

I hope the Qihoo CEO is serious about building a great, secure product. I will wait and see. I know there are many on this board who know security better than me and I will leave it to the experts to determine the quality of the new product.

If I see a repeated, long-term pattern of positive reports, I will definitely give the English version a try.

Thanks to everyone for the reviews and feedback. I just wanted to share my experience with the Chinese versions.

OK thanks for the feedback, perhaps it´s not for me then. But I also read that you think the HIPS is still amazing? Can you perhaps post a few pics?

    @ Jaspion and cruelsister

Thanks for the feedback. A bit OT but what I meant with "being jealous" is that I can not imagine that people are still fascinated with blacklist scanners, I would never rely on only one, that´s why I think VirusTotal Uploader is the best thing since sliced bread. :argh:

    So far...

I've been experimenting with 360 running alongside OA Premium, Sandboxie and MBAM Pro all in real-time on an XP Pro SP3 machine with only 2 gigs of RAM.

During ordinary browsing sessions online I've found that RAM usage is in the 30% range and CPU usage is virtually nil.

Impressive coexistence with no apparent conflicts (thus far). :thumb:

I was reading on their website last night that 360 blocked 75% of sample malware whereas Bitdefender Free scored higher with 82% sample malwares blocked. That made me gain a little bit of trust for them to admit that.

Qihoo CEO was the largest Malware maker in china, it is called 3721. You can not remove it and it hooked everything in your kernel system.

;). So that is how to succeed today? Start a malware company, sell it, then sell everyone the cure. If that is the history of this product, I am not interested in supporting it.

I am sure many people don't care, as long as it works. But I am sick of seeing all the people creating pain for people, just so they can come back later and profit from it. It may be common and in fashion these days, but I won't be a part of it.

Sorry to rant, but it is something I have to take issue with.

    Thanks for sharing the info.

Some argue that big antivirus companies do or have done this in the past as well. It's all speculation, just use a product that does it's job.

I'd use this product in a heartbeat if it weren't for the negative reputation in the past.

    @AVusah

Yes. I am sure it has been done by more than a few, especially early on in the days of malware and viruses. The guys that created them went on to found or be employed by the companies that sell us the solutions.

As long as there are options from very reputable companies, I prefer to stick with those. It is likely that the history of even the AV giants might have some questionable actions or individuals, but hopefully they have developed into trustworthy, reputable companies. Maybe it is the normal evolution of this industry.

I guess security is a very individual effort. Just have to make the right choices and avoid obvious risks. It is a shame so much energy has to be put into simply protecting one's info when on the Internet, but I guess most of us get some kind of entertainment from the effort! ;)

I think if the company provides a product that survives the tests of community members, like those here at Wilders, for an acceptable period of time then I suppose it would deserve a chance. I hope for Chinese companies to have a chance for success as any other would. However, like many have mentioned, better to wait and see what the future holds. I do agree with AVusah that the company might behave much better given the scrutiny it faces in the open World market. If they want to make money, they cannot afford a major crisis of any sort, and I a sure they want to make money :)

I am not an expert, so if something was going on with an application, I would likely not notice until it was too late. I will let the experts test this, since they know what to look for and will notice any leaks that could exist.
