Who would use an outdated anti-malware made in 2009?

Oh my, that is sooo long ago. Back to 2000/2001 or so. We had several beta-testers here at that time.
I remember me David, Tammie, and Shirley at the PestPatrol company back in those days.
I remember me having, later, tens and tens of PMs with dear old dadkins (RIP my dear old friend) about ongoing issues with this program; we used to laugh so much.
It has been sold and sold again (eTrust, CA).
    It's all history.
Forget about it (unless it has been greatly improved ...).

(PS: this belongs more at "other anti-malware software" forum section than in the "other anti-trojan software" forum section).

Wow....thanks for jogging my memory, FanJ. I had forgotten where and how I remembered this product and the name....until you shared that post.

Spyware Doctor, ZeroSpyware, CounterSpy, Giant/Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Spy Sweeper, ewido anti-spyware, PestPatrol.....and on, and on, and on. Funny, how EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE....are now defunct. The "anti-spyware" apps and craze of the middle part of the decade of the 2000's didn't quite make it to the latter part of the decade....let alone into the "next" (current) decade.

As far as I could see I bought a licence in 2001.
I haven't used it for years now.

    I used it years ago.

    Some of us use neither.

  10. I liked PestPatrol.

When CA got ahold of it, it started going downhill.

I always thought it was underrated back in the day. It didn't seem to test well.

I remember once where a virus had manhandled McAfee... PestPatrol stepped in and saved the day.

I was disappointed when it faded away. I even kept it on my system for awhile after they stopped putting out new definitions.

I was also later disappointed when Ewido went away.

I was also later disappointed when SuperAntiSpyware become all sucky and worthless.

MBAM is great. Hopefully it sticks around awhile..

Same. I remember using SAS free back in the days along with MBAM. Then for some reason I went careless about my security for awhile and now I am kind of sad to see SAS gone down the road like this. I sure hope MBAM does stick around.

    Hello,

Computer Associates, the company that acquired PestPatrol, spun off the business a couple of years ago. They are now called Total Defense. If you want to look at the current version of the product, that's where it's located.

    Regards,

As far as I remember Ewido was acquired by Grisoft (AVG)

I believe Ewido was acquired by AVG.

I used to use PestPatrol many years back and it was quite decent back then. But the the rest of the Etrust or CA suite was kind of crap (I'm being polite too).

It was Tall Emu product (Online Armor) that was sold to Emsisoft.

  21. Yes, this is correct (reference Ewido being eaten up and destroyed by AVG). And you can read the whole story here..

..ironically, that thread was started by the same guy quoted above -- gerardwil.

And I was in that thread too. I was not happy.

ahh..... good old days. it was a great fun to fight with adwares/ spywares and comparing all these tools. that spyware war on xp wil never come back.

my God, i really miss that fun. i was addict to this. i don't remember any scanner that i did not try.

Spyware/ adware craze came to an end with the evolution of rookits, rouge scanners and scareware.

By the way 2004 to 2006 was the time when i used these scanners.

I used to use the free trial on mine & peoples comps in the early 2k's. The main problem with it was, ALL the FP's it threw up

I had to manually check each one to make sure they were legit, or not. Often this could take quite some time :thumbd: Gawd knows how many average users comps got borked by it deleting non malware etc ?
