Legacy, don't forget to make a snapshot before you head backwards for an on-line restore test... that way you have a way back from whence you came (and very quickly, I might add).

    Hi

I'm currently restoring as I write this on my tablet using the boot cd. I started the online restore then cancelled only my mistake I forgot to backup some critical files beforehand.

Partition guru saved my bacon and got my needed files back.

I'm half way through the restore.

    Update:

Restore worked sweet as a nut quite fast too.

    Overal im very impressed.

Next challenge to backup and restore my encrypted windows 7 drive.

    thanks all and dev too.

I did another backup, fast as lightening wow.

one Thing i would request, when you click the x in the gui, it would be nice to minimise the app rather than closing the program. When doing a backup.

When you click the 'x' and you have auto back ups ticked the app minimises to the Sys Tray otherwise it closes. I think that the feature you are talking about has been requested...assuming that you want it minimised even if you have not ticked the auto back up option o_O

I've been reading this thread for some time now and am very interested in what I've read. I have a quick question, for which I think I know the answer:

I've been using MSE for several years and am growing increasingly alarmed at how poor it is doing in AV reviews/comparatives. I am ready to try a different AV. (Though, I have to admit not being too concerned since I use Sandboxie for almost everything I do online.)

However, I have had a couple of nightmare situations in uninstalling antivirus software. On 2 different occasions, years ago, before I became a backup and imaging fanatic, I had to re-install Windows as a result of a bad AV uninstall.

So, my question is this: Is AX64 a good tool to use before uninstalling an AV and for trying out new AV's? (Like I said, I think the answer to this is a big yes....)

    Hi Alex :)

Indeed it is. AX64TM can protect your current data via partition image, then you can begin to make whatever software modifications desired, and if there is any problems, you can restore the image using the programs boot media, and start over.

In addition, after you create your first full image, you could then create at least 1 incremental image of your current system, then begin your modifications, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the incremental right from within Windows and get back to the point in time the incremental was made, rolling you back to your current system.

AX64TM is both an imaging solution and a snapshot style solution, best of both worlds and quite flexible. :)

    Hope that helps!

    Jim,

Thank you very much for answering Alex's question! I'll just add that there is no need to create an incremental - one can always quickly revert to a full backup too (please let me know if I'm missing something).

    Hi Isso :)

Thank you for the correction my friend! I am sorry I overlooked that ability with a full image.

I hope things are going well for you Isso. Your team is doing a wonderful job and your support is truly outstanding. Keep up the great work! You are a great example of how software development and support should work.

    Have a peaceful night :)

Would restoring the first snapshot (20MB) not be faster than restoring the full backup (6GB)?

Merging hung up for a hour or more at 57.6%. It said merging 2 files. I hit CANCEL button and rebooted. It finished merge okay.

First time I saw that. Running 1.2.0.1120 on Win7 pro 64b machine.

Hi Al! When restoring under LIVE Windows (not the RECOVERY MEDIA), AX64 TM only restores the difference between where it's at and where you want to be... it matters not how big the snapshot is where you are headed. If you're 20mB from your baseline, that's all that will be restored. If you're 20mB from a 20mB snapshot... same restore.

The BASELINE is only restored when you have to recreate the entire disk from scratch, via the RECOVERY MEDIA, possibly following a serious infection and an unBOOTable system.

Isso, do you still believe that this will still fail for me?

Isso, I saw your free offer, but was wondering if my issue had ever been fixed? It had to do with a wireless USB mouse and DVD drive select.

    FROM Post #705...

OK, a few issues with my 32 bit XP Pro system.
First, I have 2 DVD drives. E: is a reader and F: is a writer.

When I tried to create the rescue media, I selected F:, however it insists on using E: anyway. So I did create the DVD as I told it to create an ISO and then I burned the ISO.

This comes up OK, but it will not see my Wired Keyboard or my Wireless Mouse.

There is no option to affect the compression of the backup file. Compression is built in and the user has no control over it...as far as I know.

OK, but it was a quote and I just wondered if the Mouse should work now. I removed the Compression item in my post. Isso could not duplicate this.

    William,

Hmm, I need to think about what might be the reason for it hanging. BTW there is no need to reboot, just cancel is fine. And generally no merging problems will affect the backups, so don't worry about the backup consistency. Merging may fail by some reason (fox example file is in use), but nothing will be affected, and the program will retry it later.

    Hello,

I'm loving software, but I do have a question.

I created a few backups of my system drive C. No problems whatsoever, performed flawlessly.

I then wanted to create a backup of my personal drive (where I store my pictures, music and movies, etc). I keep getting an error code.

I read that you can back up multiple drives on the same destination drive on the AX64 webpage.

Any ideas what I'm doing incorrectly?

    Thank you in advanced.

    ghidorah68,

Please collect the logs by clicking on the top left corner of the program, selecting About then Collect Logs. It will produce a zip file, please send it to info@ax64.com and include your original post. Thank you

It may not be a good idea to defrag the drive where AX64s snapshots are stored. At least (for sure) not when AX64 may be creating snaps during the defrag. I allowed Tune-up Utilities to do this as part of my monthly PC maintenance and when I did a restore to a snap that was created during the defrag a number of items that I had set previously were changed. Specifically, many of the task-bar icons I had set to show both icons and notifications were no longer displaying. In addition, I am using 12Ghosts hyper backup to monitor critical files and when I checked the files being monitored about half of them had been removed from the monitor list. Neither of these are serious as I simply reset them but had I not noticed that the monitored files had been removed from the list it could have been serious when it came time to recover a file I thought was being monitored. What is serious is that I have no idea if anything else has been changed.

    I am running Win 7 64 bit.
