Baidu Antivirus 3.4.2.35903 - downloaded from http://sd.baidu.com/en/ - but no changes on Avira signatures updates. I've reinstalled Baidu. Perhaps it's necessary to uninstall the older version before installing the newer one...
Just installed the latest version. It immediately found 2 "threats" that the previous version did not find. (the false positives were understandable, maybe not even false, found in SafeIP program).
@Thomas_sz ......... It doesn't seem to make any difference with this software in it's present form how it's installed. I've just done a clean install of this latest version 3.4.2.35903, and the Virus defs are still giving a date of 17 June 2013 with still no updates. I had to do the trick of running the Avira updater as Administrator to get that to update. This software is still not ready and should still be in Beta. Unfortunately, I've had some registry issues with Qihoo 360 which I've reported to them and so cannot use that (or I would !). Awaiting some further feedback from them.
No it's not in Beta it went final some months ago (middle of May), if you look in the top left hand corner the 'Beta has been dropped' to simply read 'Baidu antivirus 2013' https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2229177&postcount=287 https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showpost.php?p=2229212&postcount=289
So is it updating at all? I have seen such strange results in testing. I would scan a folder with samples, and get nearly no results. A few minutes later (and I had not changed any settings, nor submitted any files) I would rescan and see Baidu find almost everything in one specific case. The database still claims to be from the installation date, though it probably isn't, and when I check for updates it claims all is up-to-date when it obviously isn't. Anybody else still trying/using it?
Maybe you're right. I got my information here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/Baidu-Antivirus.shtml
Call me a killjoy, but unless they fix the auto update issue thats been plauging this software can be declare it dead?
They certainly have the cash to make improvements. They just announced 2nd quarter results; among the stats were a statement of cash on hand- 5.8 billion USD. Not exactly chump change. The one issue is that their primary focus (shown by Baidu's just announced acquisition of Chinese wireless app store 91 Wireless for a mere 1.9 Billion) is Wireless. A Windows based AV and its development may be pushed down the list of priorities.
Their Forum is pretty much dead, I asked about the update situation but got no reply. It's a shame. Their cloud is fine when it works, but generally it finds anything clean on a first scan, only detecting stuff from the second time you scan it. When it does work it rivals Qihu's detection rate.
Aaaand: a reply from Baidu! This is what I posted: This is what I got: So far, all considered, I would regard this as very promising. Let's hope they do keep improving. As for the virus database, yes it will feature weekly updates only. That's an interesting approach. I really don't care for it, but, Baidu does have a strong cloud it seems. If they really fix the current scanning problem (and the update o/c) they can be contenders again.
Thanks for the info! At least Baidu ain't going to be abandonware. And stays good cloud AV and very lite.
I just ran a test with Comodo, Qihu and Baidu. Baidu detected the most malware, impressive. Of course, although it's not the first time I've seen it work so well, I've also seen it fail miserably at times. But again, it shows good promise. Kudos.
Thanks it's reassuring to know it works (most times). Weekly updates is a start I suppose, but as they say, they put their trust in the Cloud engine.
Thanks for the headsup. Installed it 'over the top' without any problem. Still no updates though. Awaiting Wednesday to see if it will update as they said.
I know this is crazy and have posted this before but my Baidu ver. 3.2.1.29578 is still updating daily, new update this morning when I turned on my computer. I have read where some installed this version and had no luck updating, but picked this up from the Baidu website back when the updating problem of newer versions was beginning. When I went to download the newest to see if the update problem was fixed I was given this older version and has worked ever since. I'm wondering for those who think they have downloaded and installed this version I have if they really did. I have tried getting an older version of some software before and THOUGHT I was getting that one but in reality was getting the newest one. Anyhow VERY satisfied with this version and sticking with it as long as it still updates. So far have not seen anything like a Wednesday update here yet, will wait to see if that changes....
Yup, very strange. Maybe they were issuing updates normally but decided it's too much of an investment? For such a big company? I find that strange. I asked them in in their Forum if this weekly updating will be permanent or just a temporary fix, because it's a security risk when you don't have internet all the time. Thanks for the info, I'm downloading it manually now. Very slow even with FDM. The program itself still says it's up-to-date.
Installed the new version over the old one, all configurations reset to default so I had to reconfigure everything. Database still the same, no updates.
