Just now starting to figure out that it would be in my best interest, arguably everyones, to be using a VPN. Does anyone have experience with RiseupVPN? Does anyone know for certain if it does the same thing as say, AirVPN? I wouldn't mind paying for a VPN, but if Riseup will get the job done; I want to consider it. Regards, me edit: Riseup mentions: "This is great, because that way your computer can communicate freely with others without getting blocked. However, bypassing the local firewall also means that your computer is more vulnerable to attack. Therefore, you should enable a firewall on your computer." So I am assuming I will need a strong Firewall, or something stronger then Windows Firewall? Can anyone tell me if I am heading in the right direction.
Does this mean that if Riseup gets the job done, you won't pay for it? I have experience using Riseup and it works fine. I can't compare it to AirVPN specifically, but it has been comparable to other VPNs that I've tried. You definitely need to heed their advice and use a firewall with Riseup. You will get all sorts of unsolicited inbound requests because they put you right out on the internet cloud. I would imagine a properly configured Windows firewall on post XP versions of Windows should be sufficient. Anything that blocks unsolicited inbound requests. Don't rely on your hardware router to protect you while using a VPN. So long as you aren't planning to freeload Riseup's services, I would say that you are headed in the right direction.
That would be unusual. With most VPN services, you must forward ports in order to be reachable. On the other hand, if that's the case, using apps (such as I2P) that use random ports would be much easier.
I love Riseup for email but could never get their VPN working on my Mac. Their VPN uses Tunnelblick and I already have iVPN running through tunnelblick so I'm not sure if that was a problem. I might give it another try. As an aside, I have used iVPN.net for the past year and love it. The price is a little expensive for a year ($100) but the speeds are super fast.
Running two VPNs simultaneously on the same machine doesn't accomplish anything useful without major routing craziness.
I don't want to run two VPNs simultaneously, I want to have two installed on my machine at the same time, using tunnelblick (Mac).
I don't use Macs, so Proprietary VPN clients sometimes don't play well together in Windows, because each wants to create its own special tap adapter, and Windows gets confused.
I know Riseup.net probably offers the best anonymous email service on the net. It's free, and I don't believe you will find anything paid better. Actually, the fact that you have to pay for an anonymous email service makes it less anonymous so Riseup would be hard to beat. The less information your have to give out for a service the better. The developers of Tor recommend it. I may try out Riseup VPN soon since I know they offer great email service.
Riseup isn't really free. Nothing in life is. Somebody's paying to keep the service going. I doubt many Wilders members qualify for the discount. If you like the service, please consider donating.
It's easy to anonymize Bitcoins through a chain of MultiBit clients in Whonix using Bitcoin Fog and Onion BC. Hint
Are you suggesting that I should donate anonymously? I'm not using Riseup to try to remain anonymous, just to maintain my privacy. I personally am proud of the organizations that I support and don't feel any need to hide from that. With that said, I can completely understand if others would prefer to remain in the shadows.
I wasn't addressing you particularly I was just mentioning that one can donate while protecting anonymity.
I just use BTC because it's darn easy. I just sent them a donation for this year. I only use them as a Smart SMTP host for my own email server. I have gotten inbound requests (one) using their VPN that Comodo popped up. Freaked me out as I have never gotten one on Air. PD
From their website: "No logs We do not keep logs, other than a record of the day a user connects. Specifically, we don’t log any IP addresses and we never log DNS queries." LOL. they do keep logs.
