I just use EAM and AppGuard. UAC is set to max, Smartscreen is activated on my Windows 8 PC. I don't think anything beyond that would do any good in terms of malware infection. In fact, I guess even EAM is not really needed. Without AppGuard, sure, but in concert with AppGuard, the Defender / MSE would probably do just fine, especially on Windows 8. I don't feel the need for "that extra layer of protection".

For testing purposes I also have sandboxie but I don't use it as protection against infection.

 

Since jmonge said browsing was fast running Emsisoft Anti-Malware along with Webroot SecureAnywhere, I've installed EAM set to having just my old favorite Mamutu running real-time. I'll use the scanner on-demand for files in the sandboxed download folder before moving them out.

Of course by the time I had this set up jmonge had already removed EAM.

MRF71!...up till about four months ago I still had some remaining faith that Vipre...might someday iron out all it's problems...Firewall...Initial Install Issues...Update problems...and Full System Scans...taking forever etc. I initially was a user of Sunbelt's Counterspy...and when GFI...took over it seems Vipre became less prominent in a corporate view...re: R&D...Research and Development...etc. Also it's forum became non-existent from a participant point of view...so it became a repository primarily for complaints from unhappy customers. It seems tickets and problems weren't taken care of as quickly as when Sunbelt were the owners...so you start to lose customers as a result. Again when it was owned by Sunbelt it was a much more Customer Focused Company...heck I even had the CEO's E-mail address with GFI the new owners...In my view lost the Customer Focus...and replaced it with Dubious Marketing Campaigns...and Mediocre Customer Service. Anyhow all of the above Critique can of course be disputed...but you asked for input...so hopefully it provides you with some answers. Sincerely...Securon

It's not as good as it was before GFI took over. It had it's own momentum here at Wilders when Alex Eckelberry, Michael St. Neitzel and Nick Halin were part of the team.

This is the regime I recommend to non-technical people and one that I follow myself. In my experience it has proven effective and non-intrusive, and applies to most platforms and usage scenarios.

• Ensuring software is up-to-date
• Installing OS patches at the earliest possible moment
• Mozilla Firefox with No Script, Web of Trust (WOT), and Https Everywhere
• Safe browsing habits, e.g. avoiding free smilies, wallpapers, pirating websites
• Uninstalling Java. (Huge liability and most home users never require it. LibreOffice/OpenOffice is (mostly) no longer dependent on Java.)
• Basic/free edition of Avast anti-virus if using Windows

Thank you for the information, Charyb. I was not aware of that.

Even with this in mind I think most home users would not be affected by the absence of Java from LibreOffice/OpenOffice seeing as the most commonly used applications from office suites are Word, Excel and Powerpoint or their open source equivalents (the reason why Microsoft offers a Home & Student Edition with only these applications for instance).

IIRC, LibreOffice is working to further reduce what is left of Java dependency, though I am not sure of the timescale of this.

Thats true. I am able to create or open files in Word, Excel and Powerpoint format even though I have never had Java installed in my W7 laptop.

Since I uninstalled Deepfreeze and replaced it with Sandboxie and did a few updates on Windows 8 my Computer suddenly became unbootable....

Did a few updates yesterday and today mornig the Computer was unable to boot...

I really have no Explanation why this happened but DriveSnapshot saved my ~ Snipped as per TOS ~!
