It remembers me of Ad-Aware Free: If identity protection for US citizen is disabled the whole GUI turns orange even if you live in Europe and therefore can't use US identity protection! :D

Zip - I think you and Trespasser are both right. The Logs button works sometimes. At least mine does - right after the latest update (1.0.16.1026) the Logs button worked for me. Then yesterday it didn't work. Then today it works again. No rhyme or reason.

As someone pointed out a while ago, the Logs button is how you get to your quarantined items, so it's pretty important that it work correctly when you need it. The Gonzales team at Bitdefender needs to fix this.

They really do need to get the LOGS button issue straightened out. Worked great for me all day yesterday. Today, not so much.

Loving it so far. The only b problem is on my system for about 5 min. After boot gzserv.exe is using 130mb and making the comouter work very hard....yikes:doubt:
Going to uave to get that under control in some way in later versions. On most computers.that type of usage is no issue, but on this laptop with only 2gb of ram its quite noticable...

I have 8 GB of ram and a Quad Core CPU, and I even notice the difference in speed.

That's why I'm not currently using it.

Did you give it time to build its cache? It slowed my fast PC down at first, but after a while it was fine.

Is there any Youtube video where anyone tests BitDefender Free without the HTTP blocking part? You know, if you want to see how effective is the actual local detection without the URL blocking. I'd like to see how often is Active Virus Control triggered, because in all the YT videos, URL blocking does all the job so you have no idea how it performs when files do get on the disk...

There are two executables running for BDF in Task Manager. At present gziface.exe is using 3.5 MBs and gzserv.exe is using 17.3 MBs. And that's with Firefox open and running under Sandboxie. Hardly system draining. Win 8 Pro 64 bit.

I discovered if you are having the logs button not working thing then exit BDF in the taskbar then click on Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition in the Start Menu. A new instance will open in the taskbar and, so far, the Logs button has been working. Beats the heck out of rebooting.

    Later...

That's a great question and one that I wondered, so I enabled the auto scan some time ago and I have to admit that I don't even know that BD is installed on my machine with 2GB.

I installed it today on a brand new clean reformatted Win 7 x64, and it updated and then did a product update as well, and forced a reboot. After reboot, everything seems fine, Logs button works fine, no problems at all. I'm hoping it will stay this way, but I'm going to stick with it, quirks and all, unless something serious goes wrong. Also, ads (messages) popup is gone completely...

Hmmm... next reboot, and Logs button is not working now. Oh well. I'll hang in there and see if they can get this fixed.. Pretty strange, that's for sure.....

I was thinking the same thing myself a few months ago. I thought I saw a video with someone testing malware on their disk and he disabled the virus shield and just used the manual scanner and local cache definitions to treat the infections. It did pretty well if I remember correctly. Not sure it this is what your talking about.

I just installed this AV again after using something else for awhile and giving this another go except I am having an issue right off the bat. I have no taskbar icon after restarting! Anyone know how to fix this? I know for a fact that Bitdefender is running because I've tried downloading the EICAR test files to verify it is working and they are blocked and the processes are running in the Task Manager. I can open the program by searching for the .exe and it opens fine just no taskbar icon in the notification area. Any help in fixing this would be greatly appreciated! I'm on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit if that makes any difference. Thanks!

This is what i mean, yes. But i'd also like to see the actual execution of samples, because AV's these days use behavior detections which require execution of files.

There are 3 different types of products that are similar: Antivirus Free, Essential Security, Antivirus Essentials.
Each of the products is available in certain countries.
There are also 10 or more localizations of the products.
To meet this criteria(locate your country to match the product and download the product language pack) you need an internet connection.

This can either be a Microsoft Windows problem or something conflicting with the Bitdefender program. If you have any other security program installed make sure you put an exception for Bitdefender Free Antivirus(interface and service).

Here are some examples I found on a microsoft forum:
"I also run AVAST on XP and have the Volume Icon problem. The problem appeared right after the Net Framework 4.0 client upgrade from Microsoft. I uninstalled the FW 4.0 client and my icons came back."
"Your comment that the problem might be due to something I ran, made me start to look at some of the software I have that could be interfering with Windows 7, focusing on problems that run all the time in background. I did a Google search with just a few words, such as "PerfectDisk" and "Avast." Bingo! I found out from one post that there is a conflict between these two programs. There was a suggestion to put the Avast folders into an exclusion file in PerfectDisk. I did that and the icons have not disappeared for three days in a row, so I am convinced now that this was the problem. "

I can't seem to find the video. It wasn't on youtube and probably around Feb 2013 when I viewed it. He was relying on the definitions on his machine rather than bitdefender getting them from the web. He had a few false positives during the test and I believe he did execute the ones that didn't get caught in the scan. Don't remember if they did any harm when executed. In the comments section, someone chimed in that the Fp's were due to the fact the Bitdefender couldn't check the web. I don't remember seeing any behavior action going on but I would think that it would be in there. Unlike most AV's out there they are trying to keep this as simple as possible so who know's what is going on behind the scenes. I have been using this AV on multiple pc's on different OS's and users. I have had zero problems with it on the machines except a while back with the logs button on 2 pc's. I just use this AV and the windows FW with no problem.

You're right Brandonn2010, One does have to wait for it to build it's cache. I'm running this on a testbed machine, and the slowdowns have gone away completely.

I guess I didn't give it enough time before.

Hi and thanks for taking the time to reply to me, I appreciate that! The only other "security related" product I have installed is EMET. I have tried a repair install of Bitdefender and still have the same problem, no taskbar icon in the notification area. I guess it really isn't a huge deal considering if I did use the built in Windows Defender that it doesn't have a taskbar icon either now, but I kind of like to have one so I can see if stuff is up to date really quickly as well as check the logs. I'm open for any other suggestions and willing to try whatever to fix this if possible. Thanks!

Yep here are a couple of screenshots that show it is turned on and running in the task manager, but no icon in system tray.

Yeah it really is. Like I said I did a repair install hoping that would do the trick and even that didn't fix it so I'm at a loss as to where to go next.
