PrivateFirewall Alternative

Hi, I am new here.

I search the forum but some post seem old. I am seeking a alternative( paid or free) to Privatefirewall.

I love privatefirewall but sometime on my XP machine it will hang randomly at startup.

I want a simple, light (no hips or other security features) firewall. Also I would like to have recent updates (not 2009...).

what do you think ?

 

Private Firewall was last updated at the beginning of this year. That it somewhat newer than 2009.

Really lightweight would be the Windows Firewall. But do not know if the XP variant is good or not. I love it from Windows 7.
Maybe Online Armor is light. Atleast I remember it being lightweight. Though you probably have to disable the HIPS. On the
other hand Private Firewall also has a HIPS.

 

I would recommend you on XP for free Kerio 2.1.5 or Filscelab FW (both are without HIPS/BB module) but there are too old for you...since 2009 you can have free Outpost with nice silent but powerfull HIPS, Risng FW Free or PC Tools FW.

 

Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5 runs smoothly on XP.
Just check its connection log... mine grows up to many MB if I allow to log permitted connections!

 

I'll recommend Jetico Personal Firewall. It's what I migrated to from Kerio and have been with ever since. I have also used Look n' Stop and Outpost, but always end up back with Jetico long-term.

It violates one of your requirements in that it does have a limited HIPS. However, this can be easily disabled by checking the bypass rule on the main rule policy window. Indirect Access to Network can also be very noisy and is likewise easy to disable.

 

A bit pricey at $39. Is that a lifetime license?

For that kind of money, I would opt for DefenseWall since I assume the OP OS is XP 32bit.

 

Yes and no. Yes, in that you can use the version you purchased forever. However, after 1 year any new versions you download will need a license renewal.

Your mileage may vary, but in my experience Jetico's software has been very generous regarding the 1 year update limit. I have installed new versions outside the 1 year window in the past and all I got was a one-time prompt reminding me that my support subscription had expired.

I know that privatefirewall has recents update. I was talking about alternatives.
