Or make it unbootable! Passwords don't tend to be stored in flash memory in laptops now, because they are so stealable it would be trivial to clear it.

Still, no problems, no conflicts, no malware.

 

That doesn't work on mine. Do do so you'd have to change a setting in the Bios itself, and to do so you'd need to enter yet another password inside the BIOS. I I remember the words "wake on" in those settings or something. I was playing around with it when I first got this box, and made sure I remedied that.

And someone would have take my box apart right in front of me to accomplish that feat. I'd hardly consider that a trivial thing. And then if they managed that they'd have my 32 digit encryption key to deal with afterward. When you add all those layers together, it's the accumulation that matters.

A logon password can be bypassed rather trivially too if they know what they're doing, and you're lapse setting up things in your Computer Management, GP and folder permissions.

Syskeys can be swept aside easily too if they're stored locally. But stored non-locally, like on a floppy, with the right tweak in Local Policy... pretty much impossible.

As with all things... layers. But a BIOS password, in 99% of cases will thwart a person from going in your BIOS and screwing with things, like overclocking your CPU/memory. That can end up being more dangerous than any malware. It's a measure I'm surprised more people don't take... even security conscious people.

Same with having a surge protector with a battery backup. A power outage can do all sorts of damage to your computer at an inopportune time. To me it's a must. I have it set up to set my computer to Standby if the battery gets down to 40%, and Shutdown safely if it gets to 25%. Everyone should invest in one of these. I got an APC one for like $40 with 8 outlets... 4 regular surge protection, and 4 with battery backup. One of the best computer related investments I've ever made. I put my computer power cord, monitor power cord, modem, speaker, and light into the battery backup slots. That way I can use my computer, listen to music, and have light for reading if the power goes out.

 

Still a model of simplicity, efficiency, and stability I see LoneWolf! Always love your setups. I'm wondering though... have you ever tried running a VM, like VirtualBox, instead of Shadow Defender? SD is a fantastic program, and I'm so glad I have a key for it. I was surprised by how simple it was to deploy, and considered it like a Sandboxie for your entire computer. But now that I run a VM I have no use for it anymore on this box.

The way I constructed this setup, seems to be quite a powerful mix, but I still would like to test it even more, before I decide to put this on my list of excellent setups (Yes, I have a list haha).

 

Webroot SA + Chrome + WOT + AdBlocker. Very Fast. High Security.

 

Good advice. Brown-outs are bad news for computers, I've been told they are more destructive than power surges. After my last computer was wrecked by brown-outs, I bought an APC Smart-UPS 1000 along with my current computer build and haven't had a problem since.

 

Yes, I know this as well. I've had to use this a few times on other peoples computers as well; and no, not for malicious intent

I'm planning on getting a UPS once I get into my new apartment at the end of the summer. I think the UPS's that can shutdown your pc are just too cool

 

Pretty much the setup I have right now except I only have Hitman Pro as an on-demand scanner, I use Sandboxie instead of NVT Exe Radar Pro, UAC at max and I don't use Abine TPL for IE10. Nice setup though.

Hello all noob to Wilders here. Thought I'd see what all everyone's using and see if you veterans would offer me some advice

AVG 2013 free (recently switched from AVAST! Free-love avast-I just like to try new things)
CFW (not home so not sure the version)
MBAM free- update everyday, scan at least once a week

Yeah... I saw other people mentioning secure logon and things of the sort in their security setups so figured I'd add those aspect of my regimen to mine as well. I think it is important. What good is all this security if someone can just hit F2 during boot and go in there and fudge a bunch of things up, overclock your CPU/memory, and fry your motherboard?
