Is there any program that let's you select a block of text and then scrambles it (encypts it) from context menu or preferably with a hotkey.

so if I write and highlight "hello" it should switch it to something like, for example, ----fdni893f3nf3fnfn923fwklfmsdfs---- to send to a friend as an IM or email or something. the friend would of course need your password/keyfile.

the user at the other end would then select the text and press some hotkey and it would display it unscrambled?

for this to be convenient it should of course remember your password/keyfile and work with an easy keyboard shortcut.

is there anything like that? recommendations?

fwiw, I use other software and better encryption schemes like thunderbird with enigmail (OpenPGP), jitsi for ecrypted messaging and voip calls (and truecrypt/diskcryptor/axcrypt/predator to protect the local computer and cloud files), but I'd still like a text cryptor for occasional use i.e. when the other person doesn't have OpenPGP solutions configured for their email client or jitsi for IMs.

EDIT, you probably know this already but its an easy answer for someone who needs an example!

EDIT, I guess a new version of gpg4win has been released, I have not tested but im guessing the integration problems are probably fixed for x64 windows platforms!

gpg4usb is easy, gpg4win, Kleopatra plug in doesn't work properly on x64 windows platforms?, but gpg4usb works great, make sure to run with adman rights on windows. you can share your public key by key server or just right click append key copy and paste the key to share and he can share his key with you, and your the only person with the master key to your public key! then you wont be sharing raw passwords with each other. + gpg4usb keeps the keys in a folder inside the gpg4usb folder, so you can store it in an encrypted container if you like, and it works on both Windows and Linux as a portable app! :thumb:

Public key example, this is what you share, and he imports it, and he encrypts the text he sends you, and you use your master pass to read it! or vice versa its really easy! or you can share your key through a keyserver, its a little more technical, but anything can be learned by reading the manual.

Thanks for all the suggestions. They seem like good programs but not exactly what I'm looking for - I want something super convenient so that I can encrypt selected text at a press of a button and then select and displays the unencrypted version of the text with a press of another button.

The closest thing I found were some encryption functions written in Autohotkey. They almost do what I want, but not quite. Still the code includes most of the heavy lifting so I think I can modify it or write a new authotkey script based on it that does what I want; I just need to spend some time familiarizing myself with the code first. If anyone here is interested in making use of this, let me know and I'll post details. (i.e. you need to download authokey, download the scripts at the link, use notepad or similar to change the password in one of the example scripts or my script, compile it using 32-bit unicode version of the autohotkey compiler, and maybe add the resulting exe into autostarts so it's always there - the default hotkeys I have in my script are Shift+F1 to encrypt, Shift+F2 to decrypt and Shift+Esc to stop the encrypt/decrypt script or exe from running in the background).
