Any idea when Private Firewall will get new GUI?

Well? Also it would be nice to get the ports stealthed.

 

I'd be happy just getting the ports stealthed.

Actually, I've been using PF for several weeks now and it passes the GRC ShieldsUP port stealth test with flying colors -- at least on my XP system. And I've run the test a few different times now.

 

If you are behind a router, then your router is stealthing your ports.

 

I am behind a router now but before I was, I took Gibson's Shields Up tests a few times and never failed. That was with minimal tweaking to the firewall.

As to the OP question, Greg Salvato at Privacyware would be a good source for your answer about the GUI.

 

Although PFW aka Privacyware claims x64 Windows 8 support i have yet to see it. It just will not install it's driver whatsoever, Patchguard deflection no doubt. And PFW takes their sweet time between releases.

At any rate they sorely need to drop the grade school.art GUI for a more modern appealing one IMHO.

 

PFW gets better ratings on Matousec's site than many other firewall products. So if it does what it's supposed to do, and it's free, who really cares about the GUI?

 

If they do decide to update it, I just hope they don't go to something like the flat "Metro" style.

Because it is really annoying to the point that it hurts my eyes and I simply don't keep the FW. Not to mention that UI is unfriendly and it's hard to see what is what...

 

I don't think that will happen soon, Privacyware claims that Private Firewall will work om my computer. They had me cleaning the registry I searched through HKEY_CURRENT _CONFIG/ENUM. It was painfully clear it was just useless, Privacyware has to update Private Firewall.

 

I'm not talking about making it a Metro app that would only run in that environment. I'm only referring to the visual style of things like the icons and boxes.

 

My point is if Privacyware woudn't update for people like me what makes you think they will update for you no matter how small.

 

If you install an AV on your system, and it doesn't work for you, and maybe a few others, but it works for thousands of other satisfied users, how concerned is that AV vendor going to be in addressing your issue? By now I believe everyone who is either a member here, or hangs out here reading, knows that because of the myriad computer setups and configurations out there, what works on one system, may not work on another system. If that's case move on and find something that does work with your particular system. A firewall is no different.

 

Wholeheartedly in agreement on that like the majority. It would become much more attractive if they ramp up the process control HIPS to also cover any registry branch as well.

As is yes it works and is ok to a limited degree but it fails miserably to be taken seriously enough to rely on for the expected confident protection that it's clearly omitted from covering,

And that GUI thingy again. No it doesn't need metro cosmetics but they could at least take a page from outpost fw. alert boxes. It's time they wake up and use their drawing board.

 

I totally agree with aztony -- if it doesn't work for you, don't use it! There are lots of other options to choose from.

 

i mailed them months ago about a new releases and they said to have several items in their 'dev queue', probability meaning they aren't doing much lately.

 

Being free, they of course work in priority on the software that brings the bread and butter.
That said, I must admit the GUI is a major drag-down to me as well.

I hope that your new choice works well for you. I had a similar issue with an AV I'd used for years, where later releases made my pc unstable. I tried everything I knew, + whatever help I could get elsewhere, to hold on to it. In the end I had to make a switch and I wasn't happy about it. I Probably went thru withdrawal for a few days too. But the AV I found after turned out to be a very pleasant surprise, for me at any rate. Cheers!

 

Well the last time when I've spoken with Greg Salvato he tell me that a new theme will come in version 8. And about a new release, it will be in July or August.
I have a question for those who actually use privatefirewall, did privatefirewall play well with windows 7x64? I only use it in 32 bit system, and now I updated to windows 7x64, and I want to use it along with avast 8 free. Thanks
