Shhhhhh don't mention how "little" RAM you got (I got the same amount) then people will say it's time to get some more RAM now when memory is cheap
LOL Yeah what did I tell you Fly, here they come. 1. RAM is not the only thing that it needs more of, the Graph card only got 128MB memory etc etc etc....2. It works just fine for the things I do with it, using XP SP3. Hint....No I don't play Crysis on it
Alright, after written 15 posts and read through 8 pages of this thread, I am simply wondering... is there anything else to complain other than this literally harmless Ask toolbar? I know that it's also bundled in the Premium version, but it doesn't do any harm, so what's the need of this blazing rage? You guys are just making a mountain out of a molehill.
Some of the business practices in general. (marketing) Uniblue stuff, a few others as I recall. Sometimes there are a few FPs but for me those are not a problem. The product may be a bit heavvy (suite) on some systems. What do they do with your personal or not so personal info these days ? I haven't used it for a while. I think it lacks 'advanced, extra features' but otherwise it's still a strong classic AV. How are you going to block the ASK junk without a firewall ? I have indeed seen it trying to phone out. (home?)
I didn't think that Avira is still partnering with uniblue now for your news from partnering uniblue is 2011
everybody speaks about the stellar protection. thats not my experience. i never used it, but a friend of mine. months ago his computer experienced some slowness. run a scan with Avira free, nothing found. run a MBAM scan and found a trojan, only then Avira came to life! problem solved finally. now i'm getting a call from my friend, his computer has big problems: Avira is not starting giving an error message, also some fake AV showed up. i know no AV is perfect, but this is everything but "stellar" protection.
not sure about trojan but as far as fake AV's are concerned rest assured that most probable reason for this is user clicking something pretty suspicious because unlike drive-by downloads fake AV's are pretty much in-your-face type of programs requiring a user's consent(big banners claiming PC running slow, problem detected etc click here).also once you click such ads it's game over for 99.9% of the cases because simply by clicking such banners user give them so much power that they can shutdown almost any AV.this is one of the reason why so many internet security suites now-a-days employ url filter/ad blocker & such simply to stop people from clicking such ads/banners but even after all this many pass through.the good old common sense when buying something also works pretty well in clicking links in cyber world too.
That could happen to any AV.And that's the main reason why the browsers should always run sandboxed IMHO.
i know, probably most of the AV's have big problems with fake AV's. i don't know details about Avira Free, but if i remember well, it doesn't have heuristics. or does it? anyway, i will install the new Bitdefender Free, i hope it will do a better job.
If every av was perfect then there would be no need for software like MBAM etc and you have proven this yourself. Would you care to share which av you think provides "stellar" protection. Then i will post a review which shows it missing stuff. My point is that a layered approach is a far wiser configuration. If you are expecting ANY av to catch them all then the best of luck with your hunting as you will not find one. Thank You.
just for information: it was the System Care Antivirus. not even Chameleon worked, but HitmanPro did the trick. Avira gone, Bitdefender in. don't want to obset the Avira fans out here, but on my friends computer, Avira updated every 2-3 days (!), and when i manually hit the update button it took ages to get updated, sometimes i cancelled after over 10 minutes. on a 50Mbps line. well, this is my experience with Avira free.
avira updates just fine here. Good luck with bitdefender until it misses something and then you will search for something else lol. And so the story continues.
let me spell it again s l o w l y for you, because you didn't read my first post on this matter: it was not only this fake av issue. it also missed a trojan during a scan. immediately after this scan i did a MBAM scan. MBAM detected the trojan and only then Avira also recognized the threat. this is not normal behaviour in my book. not to mention the update problem. but hey, lets not put too much into this, it's only a software program... nothing to get excited about. as for myself, i use what's in my signature for quite some years.
Yes i did read your 1st post on this.(Well rant would be a far more accurate description.) Most av,s struggle with fake av malware. I have not been in that situation myself so i dont know the full scenario there. Avira has been lighter on the system which is why i like running it.I dont need spectacular detection rates as im a fairly safe user. The only people that need these apparent great detection rates are the wreckless careless users whi download crap after crap on to their computers or visit the darkside.
With your setup (and mine) yoi could visit the."dark side"of the.net eveyday all day.and you would be safe.
Yes very true. i have supplemented avira with comodo to give it the zero day component. I think they run very nice together and if avira does miss something then comodo will catch it. BTW you have a nice set up and i hope its running well for you.
No AV will detect everything. As for the suite, by default not all threat categories are selected. A mistake IMHO.
Sounds like the real problem is between the chair and the keyboard. Expect your friend to eventually have problems with whatever you install for him next.
