General opinions on its protective layers, and new threat prevention?

I am using Avast 8 know, and it seems good, but a vendor is selling Bitdefender Antivirus Plus for almost nothing, making it hard to pass up.

Only a suggestion but , I would try it to make sure it runs okay on your system . If it does , I would switch . It IS better than Avast in my opinion .

Let me put it this way: it does have good detection rates and overall good protection.

However, if you go to their forums for 2013 products here, you will see that the program is very buggy and can cause a lot of issues.

And you'll also find on their forums that even the paid-for products evidently have pop-up adds. Even though they can be disabled by contacting Bitdefender individually, the very fact that they are there turns me off from their products. But to each their own...

Having an SSD, the 100% drive usage problem scares me, but other than that, I saw no unusual number of problems reported on the Bitdefender forums.

Is it buggier than normal for an antivirus program?

I have been using it since it was introduced, and have not found it buggy. I guess I could say it was buggy since I have never been able to get the Sandbox to work with any of my browsers.

Totally buggy in my experience, and that's not all. Tested it three months ago, I felt it like trying to lift tortoises when doing common tasks on my pc's (I tried it also on my 2nd machine just in case of incompatibilities), which it's a shame because I really wanted to keep it due to its excepcional detection rates in latest months. If I had to label BD with a couple of words I'd say buggy as hell.

Quite opposite case seems to be the BD's tech partners, vendors who use their av engine alone: F-Secure, Bullguard, etc.

BitDefender was very decent AV from its very origin.

Check this link for one particular nasty issue where a Bitdefender user had to write his own code to correct the problem.

Judging from that forum thread alone..Bitdefender support is totally non-existent.
Lots of angry customers on there.

    Not good.

I can't believe there haven't been more posts here about the apparent pop-ups advertising other Bitdefender products, even in their paid-for products. Several posts about it on their forum. To me, that's just unacceptable. Maybe it's more common than I'm aware of...

When I tried it a few months back just to play with , I found BitDefender support to be beyond pathetic ! Emails do go unanswered . So , if you use it and have a problem , good luck in finding help .
