For Emsisoft Anti-Malware users and those familiar with the program....

I believe that you can try the fully functional program for free for 30 days, and then once the 30 day evaluation period has elapsed you can buy the software, or it is reverted to an on-demand scanner only.

This is from the Emsisoft web page:

My question is.....once the 30 day evaluation is up, if you decide to keep the program, is it simply a scanner, or will the on-demand scanner remove any malware that it finds during a scan?

yes it will remove them but i will suggest you install Emsisoft Emergency Kit instead , it is the same as EAM "on-demand" but portable so no installation needed.

 

It's a full featured on-demand scanner.

 

I enjoy the Emergency Kit. EEK . Never tried the EAM. Are there any benefits of expired trial EAM over EEK?

 

none at all

 

There are some, but they are minor. For example EAM Free (which by the way can be chosen right at installation, so you don't have to wait for the trial to expire) allows you to scan via the context menu which isn't available in EEK as it requires the installation of a context menu extension which contradicts the idea of a portable on-demand scanner.

I think that's actually a pretty significant reason for opting to go with EAM over EEK.

Plus, I'm guessing if someone ever decided to use the paid version of EAM and run it resident, the program is already installed and it would be a simple matter of installing a license key.

 

If I remember correctly, EAM Free leaves one process running in memory, while EEK does not.
Can someone confirm?

 

Correct. The service keeps running, doesn't consume any CPU though and releases memory as soon as other processes need it. The upside is, that you don't have to deal with constant UAC prompts as all actions are run elevated automatically through the service.

 

I stay with EEK as I just need all these scanners only for system scan.

I always thought that an installed av is more effective than a portable, especially if it is a featured av, because it works in and from the system, in a lower level. Is it ?

but like so many good programs,it has evolved into quite a bloated monstrosity.
Vendors need to seriously consider using cloud technology rather than having to update with enormous signature databases.

 

We use quite a bit of cloud technology actually, when it makes sense. Putting the majority of the detection into the cloud isn't a good idea and definitely not the way to go.

Giving more choice to the end user is usually a bad idea because the end user is more often than not pretty clueless. If he wasn't he probably wouldn't need any kind of AV software to begin with.

 

Most vendors have well optimized databases so the Sig updates should be very small .

 

I'm now using EAM. I always had problems with EAM stopping Admuncher from workning. But now with EAM 7 it's working flawlessly and the issues have been fixed (finally, after more than 2 years).

Still a bit rough on system impact, but the protection is top-notch (real world test results are 100% and my own tests put it at around 95%).

Great software.

 

Most anti malware programs of today are becoming bloated.

Malwarebytes is the exception to the rule.

 

Comparing apples and oranges. There is a reason they don't recommend running MBAM only. So MBAM essentially is added on top of the "bloated" other software. It doesn't replace it.

 

Old trick. Set the Emsisoft AntiMalware(free) service to start manually and it won't run untill you start the software.

 

I seem to recall this little method....but isn't there a little something more to it when you do this? Or is it as simple as doing this, without any other issues, delays or problems to encounter?

 

Keep in mind though that unless your user has the right to start services you won't be able to run EAM at all.

It would but people who are concerned about an additional process are usually the same people practising LUA.
