Sigh..., I'm done with Firefox =_="

Added a new theme to Seamonkey, made a few slight tweaks, added a few extensions like adblock. What can I say, what a stable browser!

Out of curiosity, I gave Seamonkey a try. Unfortunately it seems to lack many of my Firefox extensions (or alternatives to them). Also I can count the number of complete themes available using one hand and none of them are to my liking.

 

Can firefox extensions and themes not be imported..?

 

I'm actually using Maxthon these days - interesting alternative. Opera is also very good. Between these 2, I don't see a need to use anything else.

 

You must have a hell of a lot of fingers.

And of those, only 4 (5 if you count the experimental one) are compatible with the latest 2.17.1.

 

SeaMonkey has been suffering from a bit of a paucity of compatible themes at the moment, especially since Cat Thief doesn't support or develop 'Mostly Crystal' any more. Much of this is the reliance on the Gecko engine & Mozilla's rapid release policy I suppose. The SeaMonkey extension coders can't keep up. I imagine most of them have daytime jobs & do their best. Because of this it is best to use Disable Add-on Compatibility Checks 1.3 which ameliorates the problem somewhat. Another thing I like about SM is that you can make multiple profiles (not unlike Chrome).

In my experience there are only two themes that have no rendering problems at all, & they are Early Blue & Kilome. 'Classic Firefox' seems to slow scrolling for me among other things, it's probably some extension clash. LCARS (also by KaiRo) won't render icons dragged level with the menu bar, although Early Blue & Kilome will. AFAIK all of the Firefox personas work with SeaMonkey. One of the reasons I like SeaMonkey is that it stays more or less close to its Netscape roots & hasn't become another Chrome clone. I am getting a tad concerned about all of the 'improvements' that Mozilla are making with Firefox & SeaMonkey is the closest you are going to get to what Firefox was originally. They have the same roots anyway.

SeaMonkey needs a little tweaking & customising but it is stable, reliable (doesn't look like Chrome), customisable (it even has extensions not available on Firefox) & renders Web pages as well as Firefox.

Possibly (many actually are anyway), but I don't think you can run Fx extensions on SM without problems.

 

Talk about nostalgia! I remember using that theme with the early versions of Firefox. Sad they he discontinued it.

Yeah, Mostly Crystal was the first custom skin I ever used on SM.

I spoke too soon, looks like they have all been ported for Fx as well now. It wasn't always the case though. PrefBar was designed for SM, although originally someone else coded it for K-Meleon. It works better on SM than Fx. The Jokulsarlon Download manager was also originally written for SM by KaiRo.

Sometimes when a computer is first started (or later) and the antivirus program is updating one may find the browser may not function due to the antivirus program using a lot of resources for those few moments. Perhaps some scheduled anti-malware program or scheduled maintenance program is running at the Firefox freeze times? Might check the 'Scheduled Tasks' list.

Some time ago when Maxthon was being looked at it was found it calls home to China even to the extent that the developer first denied it but later recanted when faced with the evidence. The browser was of course set to not self update, sending in maintenance/crash reports was disabled and no addons were installed.

I never have any of these problems I see others mention of FF crashing. And I make a ton of about:config tweaks, disable caching of all kinds, and have NoScript with everything turned on and 5 other addons. And it's by far the most stable and responsive of the 3 major browsers for me.

The ABP Element Hiding Helper especially is a godsend. I can fine tune all my frequented sites to allow only what's necessary for proper functionality. It improves the page loads times dramatically. In some cases makes it practically instantaneous.
