I heard that the Winklevoss twins made a fortune with Bitcoins. Now there's foresight for you....

And from majorgeeks.com comes this today...

    Bitcoin mining

Heard of Bitcoin? Well, it's still in the news, but not for any of the right reasons. Back on April 10th, Bitcoin was going for $263.79 but has since fallen to just over $100. Bitcoin is the new digital currency which is generated by software solving computationally difficult problems. Bitcoins are exchangeable for real-world currencies like the US dollar.

Since 2011, malware threats have been trying to steal bitcoin miners, one even trying to hide itself as a Trend Micro component. Bitcoin exchanges have been hit with Denial of service attacks. The criminals often try to use infected machines for bitcoin mining, costing the unaware user with increases in their electric bill as the mining often requires extreme computing. Graphics cards can be used for high-volume Bitcoin mining. The miners that are used by malware, however, currently take advantage only of an affected system’s CPU, not its graphics. A computer with one of these GPU-capable miners would be equivalent to dozens of ordinary machines.

    Well,......sort of!
At the peak of the Bitcoin boom – the twins were truly worth a fortune! Now, after the crash – not anywhere near what they were worth – but still smiling!

Bitcoin has obviously attracted the attention of some with real money, and they are pumping and dumping. Market value will have to grow about 100-1000 fold before that damps out, I suspect.

This is an interesting article from The Guardian about Bitcoins being used in Berlin by local traders

It'd be great if Bitcoins were used more commonly in this way.

    That is very strange.

I've read before about the "very many very small transactions" problem, but not that they're encoding data. So are there apps for finding and decoding data streams?

    I agree - very strange!

From the Bitcoin wiki, there is a link to Software that may indicate some open source Bitcoin client related apps, but I have not looked to specifically answer your question.

According to the article, it is the bitcoin addresses that are being spammed which apparently cannot be verified.
