Is this right - chart comparisons

Been using Eset for some time now. Started with NOD32 and moved to ESS a while back. Occasional issues but few and that's usual firewall or some change after a new version. However these results are interesting (ESET is down the chart a ways):

Not that it is all false, but it is not real-world scenario.

Personally I have dropped following almost every Av tests. There is just one, and it is Av comparative . I really care less ,if my chosen Av solution has dropped 1 or 2 percent in e.g. file detection or if it has been graded badly in a single firewall test. Just ask yourself, have my security solution been able to keep my pc kleen? Have it given me any big issues regarding incompatibility with software, that is necessary for me? And how has support been, when you have had problems? I have seen friends shifted to another Av vendor, almost every year, causing more problems for them, than solutions. Installing uninstalling problems, colliding drivers and so on, all in persute for that two procent better protection. My point is just, that if you are happy overall with whatever security solution you have, then why use any time on these tests. There is always the risk, that one will be trapped or contaminated, with the Av test disease, thinking that the grass is always greener on the other side. And in the end, it will most probably, just leave you totally confused.

The best thing is to test it by yourself.

 

As for false positives, look at various vendors' forums and compare the number of reports from users which is a good indicator of quality. There have always been very few FP reports about ESET detecting a clean file and they mainly concerned highly suspicious files or potentially unwanted applications which are not actually FP.

 

You should look at the original report/data, not the resorted/interpreted data/ranks done by magazines. If you look at the report, you see that ESET was amongst those with only few FPs.

I've been with Eset for a long time. I'd considered moving back to NIS as I can get it for free from my ISP and feel it's improved greatly over the past (over 6 years or longer I would say). But, my experience with Eset has been positive and I honestly don't' remember the last time I got ANYTHING on my PC that I had to deal with since I've been using Eset.

I'm not looking to "jump ship" but do a "ph test" with the users if you will. I've often wondered about these tests results anyway.

Janus.. well put. I do consider these things and always do. I appreciate the thought and time you put into your response.

I will admit that when a new version comes out there seems to be some tweak that needs to be made at the firewall level, or new feature, that I didn't have to deal with before. Not long after going to ESS v5 I was having issues with a certificate and getting LogMeIn to work on my PCs. I have that kink worked out I believe. Haven't been back to LogMeIn in a while.

Now, just trying to decide if I want to move to ESS v6. I'm sure the usual uninstall, clean and then clean install of the latest, v6, would be in order. Just want to be sure ESS v6 is solid and has worthwhile features for me to make the move. And, like Janus said about switching, sometimes the same issues come up with changing versions.

The article you asked about, Microsoft Outperforms Symantec in Antivirus Test, discuses the results of tests done by AV-Comparatives last month (March, 2013).

The test results can be downloaded for free from AV-Comparatives web site at Real-World Protection Test Fact Sheet and File-Detection Test. More specifically, though, the Ziff-Davis article discusses an appendix to the tests, which is available as a separate download from False Alarm Test for March 2013.

I agree with IBK's recommendation that you review the results of this appendix.
