    Evo_Gen would not would not be applicable to that test - that test was file detection which I would assume would be near 100% signature based.

    Evo-Gen would come in after as AV-Comparatives Real World tests showed where with user input Avast 8 blocked 100%, which only 2 others AVs did and the highly rated Bitdefender did not do.

    Sorry no Evo-Gen in on-demand scans.

    And on a side note, I have to stick up for Norton. I mean, they have clearly indicated many times (e.g. by withdrawing from all tests like this) that their longer-term strategy is to ignore on-demand scanning and focus on actually protecting their users. Realize that by making on-demand scanners more powerful, you're helping the bad guys to create malware that bypasses the real-time protection. Or, you're making it at least cheaper which is what it's all about at the end of the day.

    vlk, what do you mean by saying "Realize that by making on-demand scanners more powerful, you're helping the bad guys to create malware that bypasses the real-time protection."?

    Fixed:
    Oct.2012 = Avast! 7 => Pos.8 / 98,6% => Pos.10 / ADVANCED+ (***)
    Apr.2013 = Avast! 8 => Pos.9 / 97,8% => Pos.13 / ADVANCED (**)
    Evo-Gen, Evo-Gen, Evo-Gen! Avast! 8, Avast! 8, Avast! 8! :D :D :D

    Just one test and norton are hung,drawn and quartered?
    Probably other tests which show norton at the top.

    Bit of a pick and mix isnt it.?

    I could be wrong, but is this the test that Symantec wanted to "pass on" or not do about 2 years ago at AV Comparatives because they knew they suck at that test. AV Comparatives said it is all or nothing. so Symantec dropped out of testing with AV-Comparatives.

    Well, at this point in time I would not consider returning to Norton. If it was that poor in detection it does not perform even close to the upper lever AVs and is not worth considering.:thumbd:

    I admit some disappointment with it as it has been one of the better ones on my machines.
    Maybe Avira is going to return to the land of the living.

    Jerry, What would you do if it was in the top three of the real world test? That is truly how it will defend your computer. Something tells me Norton uses too much of the cloud and this test is not cloud based. Therefore fail. Guess they need to grow their "on computer"definition file so performance will be with the others.

    I'm running FortiClient 5.0.2 on one of my PC's, and I really like it. Excellent detection rates, low FP's, very configurable (and effective) URL filter, frequent signature updates (I have read it's every three hours), no registration, and no nags to buy something more.

    The client appears to hide some good technology under an unassuming user interface. Their CEO was interviewed by Network World magazine, and here's what he said about their client:

    "...with our FortiClient, we can evaluate an incoming file, if there's no signature, but the file looks suspicious, we can run it through a light on-device sandbox, if we still can't determine the nature of the file, we'll send it to our cloud service, which opens the file in a protected setting. If it is safe, it goes through. If it's bad, we stop it."

    Impressive!

    Re: Boy Has Norton Dropped down

    Hi Blushoes,
    In that case I would consider it if I had any troubles with the ones I am currently using.
    I realize there might be something re the cloud that might change the results, but in my ignorance I don't know about it, and all I have to go on is test results.

    At this time both of my AVs are running well, and so I have no need to change. However, I have a copy or two of Norton that I could go back to if necessary. But I do not have the confidence to do that. Instead I might go to the one that is running well or one of the others I have cheap access to:Avira and Trend Micro.

    When it comes to detection and overall protection I have utmost confidence in AV-C.
    Regards,
    Jerry

    I think they use their own engine.

    I haven't used it since they first released their free suite. How is it resource-wise? The user Kees1958 has prophesied that Fortinet was getting better, maybe he does know a thing or two.;)

    Yes I sometimes look for a reason to dump it, but haven't found it yet.

    No Kaspersky product has done this since version 5 (MANY versions ago) iSwift and iChecker use local databases now instead of adding meta-data.

    Some people keep saying that Avira is about to die... Well for a moribund company these are great results. It is not true that the majority of malware comes from browsing the internet, but it is true that some companies without the cloud fare miserably.

    Oh, you make a choice by looking at detection rate test ?
    wow .....
    Norton is the best (for me) to keep PC safe from the web that's it.
    If AVIRA doesn't see a threat what happens then ? :D
