Yeah, one shouldn't have to resort to a registry hack for anything.. a config option would be great.

What happens if I did restart?

And, by which should I uninstall? Windows add/remove or Bitdefender's uninstall tool?

    GREAT...

This happened on my wife's laptop today. I've installed the client on several other relatives computers and now some are calling me saying something's wrong with their computer.

How could you let this happen? Seriously? You didn't even update the client. It seems to me you need to work on your free product. This isn't the advertisement you want. And rest assured people will switch security solutions if you only give them trouble by having the product installed.

Much disappointed about this. The Bitdefender protection is great. But not when it crashes your relatives computers and you're the one who put the software on the computer in the first place.

I assumed everything would work smooth when I clicked that restart button.

Well I re-installed BD Free but the version remains 1.0.14.889. What is the new version anyway?

Then what was the whole product update thing about on the GUI? It had the button to restart. So I restarted and BD did not upgrade to newest version. What's going on here.

Not quite sure what the restart button was for if there was no version update.

This is a known bug. I was contacted by dev team and requested some dumps from my system to analyze it. We exchanged a few messages about this and the other bug (the one that keeps telling you 'Threats were succesfully cleaned' or something like that). I was told it would be fixed in the next product update... but, we all know the story.

I just wanna make a suggestion tho, everyone is entitled to have an opinion and express it freely here. But there's a limit when the words start to look (and feel) more like an attack. If people keep bashing and telling how bad the product is (for them), it'd be better to stop it here and create a new thread once the update is released. We have been told numerous times, that the update was delayed. Deal with it, if this product does not meet your expectations as it is at this stage, move on. But nobody has the right to criticize the work (or lack of) done on this. These guys work for Bitdefender, I'm sure is not a matter of willingness. If it was for them, I'm sure they would've fixed most of the bugs already. Probably Bitdefender has them working on something else, we don't know that.
    Well, just my 2 cents...

I already sorted out the problem by doing a re-install.

I simply wanted to know if restarting the comp via their restart button would **** up my computer, which I do not need. I've already mentioned numerous times how I enjoy the product and how efficient it is at blocking malicious websites.

The Restart "bubble" was about "Protection/Service unavailable", not the "Update performed (you need to restart)"

Since it was the first time when you (and 99%+ of GZ users) saw this message :D, it was easy to confuse..

Later Edit: You're right, there was also an "Update performed, please Restart" bubble, since we've performed an emergency product update; but it was just one file, and we kept the Product Version number..

With all due respect, changing even just one file and keeping the version number identical (down to the dot dot dot level) is not a good idea. In situations just like this one, where bugs are encountered and then patched, if you keep the version number the same while changing the program, how does a user (or your own QA team) really know what code they're running?

Since Bitdefender asked for a reboot, I have to assume it was the executable itself that was changed (not a signature file) - for that, there really should be a new program version number.

You're right; with the exception for this update we always did this way.
This update was our first emergency one, and it slipped our minds to change the version..

No offence but that has always been the problem with Bitdefender: Superior detection but superior problems as well. I hope the best for Bitdefender Free Antivirus but I'm really sceptical.

Ok I gotcha. I wasn't paying attention to the fine print. All that grabbed my attention was the big restart button and I thought "yippee!!! the new version is here!". After I restarted my computer and saw the version number hadn't changed I went ahead and re-installed BD Free and I probably didn't have to. The good news is it's still working properly.

Nothing major to complain about so far. I right clicked my HD and scanned the whole thing, though, and it reported back with 4 threats removed. The items removed were logs from Glary Utilities. Don't care if they're gone and I'm assuming they're a false positive. Wouldn't know how to upload them for further testing or where to find them even if I wanted to though, hehe. Malwarebytes and Emsisoft and Kaspersky TDSS Killer don't report anything, fwiw.

Still, I like the simplicity and lightness so far. Not to mention BD technology.

Still seems to be a beta release from what I've been reading here.

The virus definitions have not updated since I re-installed BD Free 2 days ago. Last update was on 4/9/2013 at 4:06 p.m.
