SecuBrowse - new player on the market

SecureBrowse...new player on the market, looks nice and easy to use, I didn'f find any options to setting. Anybody have knowledge or experience with this app?

I don't like how the icon looks sort of like Sandboxie's (Almost diamond yellow shape with dots.) By reading it's description, and in Softpedia's site, only Internet Explorer and Firefox is supported in running sandboxed. Still too early for general use. (No automatic deletion, etc)

 

Hmmm...it does not look to hold anywhere near even a flickering candle to Sandboxie.

Doesnt appear to be too much information about the company behind this going by the above links.
I agree about the icon though,it does have a similarity to the famous sandboxie icon.
You never know ,perhaps ronen is behind this somewhere along the line.

I know...Sandboxie is "the best" and nothing can damage its position but there is also some place for other projects. Maybe icon is funny, maybe features are too simply...but honestly I don't like Sanboxie and if I would have to make the choice I would take SecuBrowser. Why?...because it's enough for me and I don't want have something more complicated.
People want to have easy and simply solutions so why not to give SecuBrowser the chance?

I agree with you. While I like Sandboxie, and especially v4, I have tried to make relatives use it in the past without any success, because the power behind Sandboxie is actually what makes it hard to deal with. Nothing wrong with having alternatives that work. If this one turns out to work great and offer more protection (protect more browsers and who knows apps lilke media players, pdf readers), then why not. Something people don't have to worry about configuring and maintain that much.

I'm hoping that when enough people get burned they take interest in wanting to change their browsing practices, become involved, and hopefully change their opinion of applications like Sandboxie. Wishful thinking, but one can hope. Don't have a problem with up start sandbox like applications. Companies need competition to drive change, otherwise development might as well be stagnant.

 

Yes, wishful thinking. The problem with applications like Sandboxie is that, unless the user gets really lucky, there's a great chance that whenever an application gets an update, it will break. I've experienced that myself. This was actually one of the reasons that made me use Sandboxie less. I still use it, but for just a couple applications, and that are not updated that frequently.

That was mostly what made my relatives lose interest in it. I understand their thinking. There was a time when I didn't mind trying to solve this and that and figure out why some application "broke" in Sandboxie, but I just got tired. So, I understand why an average user feels "tired by default". They have more interesting stuff to do in their computers, other than having to figure out why this or that doesn't work. If it doesn't work, most people call or take it to the computer shop, if they don't have anyone else to resort to.

But, yes, I also hope that these new sandboxing applications evolve well, and offer something lighter to the users. We don't need that every application have whistles and bells.

 

More or less objective remarks

Agree on the icon choice, when the icon leans so much on the SBIE image, the developer looks like he/she tries to lend some of SBIE's credibility and reputation. It is his/hers own fault to trigger a fanboy frenzy when using a simualr icon.

Deny execute of the C:\sbox can be easily achieved so that is fan boy critique (follow steps below)
1. right click folder, select properties from pop-up menu
2. click the security tab,
3. click advanced button,
4. click change permission button,
5. click add button,
6. type Everyone in (user) text box and Enter
7. select "Traverse folder / execute' under the DENY column
8. OK, OK, OK , etc

Problem with application virtualisation is not only redirecting file access, but also redirecting (virtualising) all memory and inter process communication. Agree that with FF this is lame, with IE there is still protected mode sandbox of IE itself (and enhanced protected mode in future windows 8 version). So SecuBrowser does not add anything to memory/interprocess protection.

Maybe the author can automate the process of putting Firefox in a low rights integrity container (through icacls command after clicking FF SecuBrowser icon) and add the deny ACE to the folder automatically (permanently).

Still some bridges to be crossed/mileage to cover, but potentially interesting approach (when combined with ACL/ACE, default mechanims of windows Vista and higher). Has some limitations (seemingly only virtualised data wriiten to two harddisk while I have three) and errors (copies files in root to sbox folder).

 

in the meanwhile tzuk "dissapeared" from sandboxie forum (5-6 days a go to post)
virtualisation and sandbox will be the main layer about pc security, just its not so mature yet.

 

Very useful and interesting notes about this new sandbox application, Windows_Security.

Hoping developer could overcome such issues, and not to allow that app. could affect folders/files outside sandbox, like PDF Readers, .bat, .exe, etc. files.

Until there we can not say it is a real sandbox application.

When you know about OS-ses, databases and data communication the principles used in mainframe, unix, Windows and Mac mainframes, are more or less simular. So you know on what to Google and stumble upon websites with tutorials/explantions. Rest is trial and error.

1. It currently only virtualises file (and registry access)

2. Next releases focus on expanding configuration

3. In future it might also run the virtualised processes in a forced LUA environment (restricted user token like DropMyRights/StripMyRights)

Goals are simple: make the benefits of file virtualisation available in a low intrusive / low usage threshold manner
