This the lightest AV I've ever used; that's why its on my system for so long!

They need to move those devs over to the paid suite then.

Does this Bitdefender AV Free uses the same engine which did very well on a lot of tests last year?

It's a wonder why any of the Bitdefender reps would want to participate here. I know if I were them, I would find something else to do with my free time.

They say it won't delete system files, and I have no reason to doubt that. However for me it's not about system files - I don't want any file ever deleted with being asked about it first.

I can understand Bitdefender not giving user the choice since this is a free version, and they need to give user an incentive to upgrade to the paid version so they can make money. Just for me, in its present form I will never install this on any of my computers or on on any else's computer.

Maybe that's a part of promotion like development BAF itself.

Understandable? Yes. Great choice? Nope. Only a moronic person would consider buying the paid version of a product that deleted their files without giving them the choice to deciding what to do about an alert. :argh:

The way I see it, it's just like their free program/extension TrafficLight. Even when it blocks access to malicious domains, it will allow the user to make the decision of accepting the warning or proceed ahead. Why? It may very well be a false detection. I couldn't even imagine it working in a different way, just because it's free.

And, nothing is really free with a security vendor. They always get valuable information about malware from even a few millions of people running the free version. So, I don't really understand this decision because it's a free version.

Their idea is to freak out as many users as possible and force them to buy any of their other versions. Hey, I'd be doing the exact same thing as they're doing. But, I'm the client, not the seller. ;)

I tried out BitDefender AV 2013 three weeks ago and I noticed drastic rop in internet speed. It was darn slow. Reverted back to a system image I did with Eset NOD32 AV and it was fine and zippy.

How about with this free version? Anyone experienced slowdowns?

Might there be a workaround for the mentioned slow internet?

    Just asking.

I experienced some browsing slowdown in Firefox, but I haven't heard anyone else mention that, so it seems it was just on my system (Win 7x64). General internet speed seemed ok though. System performance was ok, just too much Auto Scanning in general, but you can turn that off. So overall, just the Firefox slowdown. It was bad enough to make me switch to something else.

I've seen this bug on several other computer as well - all Win8 64bit. :doubt:

It's possible to turn off the webshield with a registry hack, I think a hidden button for that would be nice. :)

I've got no problem on Win8 x64. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I've got no problem on Win8 x64. Maybe I'm not an Avast fanboy.

I had not read this thread before I went ahead and restarted my computer for the product update. Does that mean my computer is damaged now?

It tells me the product has updated even though the version number is still 1.0.14.889
