About ADS questions i agree (but detection rate is more more more important), and i never had a single update problem.

Yes, i know all of this. But i continue to prefer Avira to Avast for the detection rate.
And now i'm trying BD free.

 

Avast has better proactive defense and less FPs.

 

well that's nice news getting Win8 certified, hopefully they've come around the issues.
I wish they'd get the Proactiv (HIPS) Module working in x64 environment real soon too.
this one has been pending like for ever.

I've been running Avira Premium for a couple of hours now with everything active on windows 8 (64bit), and not one single issue so far. It's coming late but at least it seems bug free.

 

You don't need that if you're running CIS6 Fw+Hips...

 

Few hours is too short period of time for all possible bugs to show...

Report here after few months of usage.

 

Remains unclear what certificate actually they got because there are Windows 8 compatible, Windows 8 certified, etc.... When certified they are allowed to use the specific logo but I do not see it.

RejZoR, there is no need to hurry. Antivirus world in the way we know it today will die in max 10-20 years. Microsoft will control it - why hurry. Corporations will not use that much 3rd party software (AV/HIPS/encryption) because they have a good ones for free - same goes for the consumers and consumers will be first. Windows Defender/MSE will be monopolist and that is. So AVIRA, why hurry to certify anything for W8 when there is Windows Defender working perfectly.

Avira is very good in the first hours, days, even week(s). It shows its horn and torn later - bug by bug, problem by problem.

 

This is better compare to Avast, that shows its weakness with PC infected...

This hasn't been my experience with Avira, every time I had issues they showed up straight away: most likely while installing (conflict prone), adversely slowing down booting time and web browsing, and finally problems turning on/off its modules using the change feature instead of uninstalling the whole program. None of these have occurred, hence I feel positive.

Of course nobody can discount the possibility of something untoward coming up in the future which I would certainly share.

 

I've been using Avira for the last 4 years on my Win7 x64 setup
i never did face any major or minor problems with it.
it worked as it should and kept my PC clean (i double check with MBAM Pro and Kaspersky Rescue Disc 3 times a year)

Proactiv not working on x64 is my only niggle with Avira.

 

The wait was worth it! I'm with the Internet Security version

Because competitors were faster on the W8 certification, maybe? On the other hand, you just can't compare the below-average WD to Avira

 

Some of them - just because they have the money and resources, and they can- they do it because reputation and some few clients requires it.
And those who have certification of being compatible does not mean they actually work flowlessly.

Oh, I can and I do it
AVIRA with no more than 500-600 employees (mostly sales guys) vs. Microsoft with 97 000 people and all the humans and $ power they have, and the technologies they can use,

the excellent reputation of the second, and the absolute zero mistake rate (0 false positive) compared to AVIRA's bad quality and tons of false positives.

Trust me, I can compare them and I do it

 

So you'are saying that Windows Defender's division within MS has 97.000 researchers! Wishful thinking... Avira's FPs in the last 3 years have been as low as any other top contender (you can check with AV Comparatives).

Personally I have been using Avira for 6 years, and I remember having several FPs sometimes in 2009 after an update which turned out to be a mistake. Since that egregious mistake by the Avira team, I've never experienced one single FP on 5 machines at home.

I really wish that people would post issues relating the new functionality of Avira vis a vis Windows 8 rather than rehashing old issues.

 

Microsoft's security division does not have 97000 people but the company itself has and is more reliable in that way.

Unlike some other people, I do not rely on biased and bribed tests from AVC/Av-Test, etc. I have many years IT experience on the fields and I see AVIRA's false positive day to day. Currently AVIRA misses a lot of threats and I clean many infected machines with AVIRA + its false positive rate is killing - I have seen it delete business accounting software, business medical software, I have seen it kill production software etc. This is happening now in 2013, not 3 years ago:

With all due respect, using AVIRA on a single machine or on a couple of machines at home is totally different from using AVIRA on many machines with hundreds of configurations.

Not an old one. I can also show literally hundreds of examples where AVIRA has incorrectly detected something in the past 1 year (including in the past week) and I can also show example where it misses threats (majority of other vendors detect). But I won't - it is not allowed here.
