General users/newbies will not know how to use these command
It is better to have a GUI DOS version.

I have a question about creating a bootable CD. Is it possible to create a WinPE CD with Snapshot.exe on it although you haven't purchased the program? I mean will you be able to only backup your Computer for like 30 days (Trial period) with that CD?? That wouldn't make any sense then. Or is it generally better to put the snapshot.exe with all your Images on another HDD so you can Access them with your WinPE CD and simply start the snapshot.exe from that HDD??

Also you can purchase a license for the program on the official Website which is basically a license key that you get via E-Mail. You can also purchase a bootable CD with snapshot.exe on it which is much cheaper. I assume that you can only use the program with that CD then and when you lost the CD you're pretty much screwed?!

Have anyone heard or asked the official about linux version bootdisk?

The current version under DOS is very difficult to use. I think a linux version for bootdisk is good for the people who do not know how to build a WinPE bootdisk.

That is some good questions andy and Arcanez. I still find it odd that by now, there is not a more complete recovery disc. As far as I am aware, you should be able to simply boot into Winre recovery, choose command prompt, and run the snapshot.exe program from either an external drive or flash device to both backup and restore, executing snapshot via command line, I am assuming.

As far as after the 30 days trial, I believe it will only restore the backups made during trial, but not be able to create an image backup. Amazing tool no doubt, but how does such a useful tool continue to lack on the most important aspect such as a restore/recovery disc?

Is it purposeful that Tom does not pursue it? It still baffles me personally.

Have a good day, and thanks for the suggestions guys...I hope Tom considers them.

    Dear Jim,

Snapshot works under Windows. Therefore, in any WinPE or any WinRE, just go where the executable is located and double click on it. The Snapshot.exe is on the same WinPE or WinRE, not on separate external drive or flash drive.

As far as 30 days trial is concerned, for this reason a version comes out every month extending the 30 days trial. Tom is a very generous man, if you catch my drift. I believe Tom's big customers are the corporations.

It is one of the best program, which can be put on any WinPE or any WinRE and run from there. The executable is only 250kb, a miracle.

    Best regards,

    aladdin,

We cannot use program size to determine a program is good or not

As for it is backup by storage structure, I think Drive Snapshot is good for the same HDD/partition doing backup and restore only.
Because it has some limitations like :
-cannot restore to smaller partition(without compact or resizing both source and target partition)
    -still has defragments after restored
    -etc...

Drive Snapshot is quite similar to Image for Windows as both of them are backup by storage structure.
Therefore, they are not as flexible as Symantec Ghost/Norton Ghost and Acronis.

    Dear Andylau,

Agreed, with only 250KB the Snapshot Drive (SD) executable, is a miraculous programs. The whole complete program is designed to fit on a 1.44MB floppy.

Another one is Image For Windows (IFW), the executable is 1.82MB.

I keep the executable of both the above programs; SD and IFW on each and every WinPE, I build.

    Best regards,

    aladdin,

Although they are small in size and portable, after doing some tests by myself, I have switched back to Ghost and Acronis.
One of the reasons is both IFW and DS cannot restore to smaller partition without compact or resizing. Of course, there are another reasons.
I can run both Acronis and Ghost on my custom WinPE.

If you ask me to choose between DS and IFW, I will choose DS.

P.S. its my own situation or needs only, it does not mean they are not good.

Where'd they go? The site's been down for a few days...never got the chance to download the most recent version (though my last (registered) version is working fine).

Thanks. I just paused EAM for a moment and was able to connect.
Looks like maybe their site got blacklisted on EAM's surf protection for some reason. (Never happened before so it didn't occur to me.)

I was able to download the latest version of the software.

Appreciate the heads up, you guys. :thumb:

I don't post much lately, but can anyone shoot out the Snapshot website URL? Does it put up *anything* about 'what' is upgraded when a new version comes out?

I've got a really ancient copy on a boot disk and it still works just fine to restore. Would be great to know anything about the mods made to the newer versions. o_O

Many thanks - and this is one hell of a great forum.

    Hi Allen,

This webpage reveals the more significant changes taking place. Other than that, each new build is released 'silently'.

No problem. We can only hope that communication with their user-base will improve (someday). :doubt:
...I have found the program itself to be stellar. :thumb:

A new build was released today (the x64 version reports v1.42.16502). While this is the typical silent release (no change log) we have come to expect from Tom, I notice that the (tiny) executable is 1MB larger than the Feb. release, so I believe that some changes took place. :doubt:

    1.42.16505 is out.
This recent flurry of activity could indicate that some issues are being fixed and that the going is rough. We'll probably never know.
I update rarely and always keep old versions, just in case.

Thanks for the heads-up on the update napoleon. As I noted with the prior build, this build has also grown in size (this one grew 5-6 KB), so it seems that some code changes are taking place. :doubt:
