Seems that you'll have to do it the hard way. Run CCleaner's registry cleaner and then ZSoft's Uninstaller with Post-Uninstall Analyzer, I'm not sure if it's Win 8 ready, tho...

 

How much RAM an AV/AM uses doesn't really reflect how light it is on the system, ESET uses 80-90 MB of RAM because all the modules is loaded into the RAM to speed up the system performance (as a result its easy on the CPU and HDD)

So basically an AV using 200 MB of RAM could still be lighter on the system than one using only 15 MB of RAM, it all depends on how it's designed. Just FYI

 

This is very true, and also you cannot always see how much RAM an app is really using as some of it is hidden. Some vendors try to make it appear very light in task manager when in reality the app is using much more, but it's hidden from view.

So.... I just had this baby kill my system. Doing a fresh install of Win7 as we speak.

I saw the popup say it neutralized an exe from the Intel RST Beta. About 10seconds after that, machine BSOD's. Won't let me boot normal or safe mode.

Ohh well, lol, full install from usb takes about 8mins for me.

 

What a pile of crap this BitDefender. No matter what i try, it ALWAYS makes my system friggin unbootable. Well, it boots to Windows and then all i get is a blank screen. Tried cleaning manually, using registry cleaners, using official uninstall tool, nothing. Ad-aware Free worked fine, avast! worked fine, Roboscan works fine, Comodo worked fine. Just not BitDefender. Heh...

 

Crashed again after exiting Blacklight: Retribution. Went to their website but there is no support section for the free version?

I have installed BDF on a total of 6 machines for my family and friends without a single issue. I have disabled auto-scan on all installs however.

 

I have only problems with Avast paid and no other antivirus i have tried has given any problems ,strange how different setups vary

 

Exactly. I tried EMET on a clean install of Windows 7 x64, and after installing, I couldn't connect to the internet no matter what I tried. I re-imaged and moved on.

 

I've tried several registry cleaners, manually registry cleaning... No way! Finally I installed Panda Cloud AV, it seems to run smoothly.

I installed BDF on 5 machines for my family members with the default settings.
4 Windows 8 x64 installs with no problems.
1 Windows 7 x32 where it did not finish installing.
Put Avast on that machine, but the gui of the latest version is a bit too complex for my mother in law. Used Reizors silent settings for Avast 8.
So different setups do indeed vary...

 

Having read all the problems users are having with BD free, I wouldn't go anywhere near it.

 

There is no such thing as bug-free software.
You have to try it yourself and then make a conclusion.

 

Well, one thing is having bugs which all do and another of being famous with that. Ever since i know BitDefender it had idiotic moronic problems that never really got fixed until the whole thing got changed so much that they fixed the issues by just doing that (meaning things got fixed mostly and only during big program updates). If anyone remembers the days of that chopped up red orb logo and white and red interface knows what i'm talking about...

 

Comodo programs manager is a nice little tool for removing all kinds of software.I have never had any trouble with it.

 

Having a free AV available for potential customers is great advertisements. But only if the vendor actually put some work into the free product. If they don't, the advertisement will be negative... and will drive potential customers away. I think that's where this product is going if Bitdefender doesn't update the free software client.

I'm happy with Bitdefender AV Free and it provides great detection but I would like to see a quarantine feature.

Or, was that only for the yet to come release? (I suppose that's what's happening, considering you're using it.)

Anyway, I agree with you. If they don't put great effort in the free version, and put available to the user, not only a quarantine option, but also the option to let the user decide what to do when an infection is found, I truly am seeing mistakes like detecting some web browser as a piece of malware, quarantine it/delete it, the user has then to restore everything back, then some othe day, the same situation with some other application, etc., the user won't be satisfied with the free version, and therefore I'd hardly see this as a way to catch users to the paid versions.

Sure, this or that infection may be real, but for the many cases when it may be not, it sure will freak people out not having an option to decide what to do. If something bad happens, is the user's own fault, but at least they made the call. After all, don't the paid version allow this already? So, they're not really concerned about the user making mistakes, but maybe genuinelly believe that the lack of decision in the free version will make users upgrade to their paid products?
