Has your email account been hacked / compromised? Let's use the definition of "hacked" as either your email account accessed without your consent or your email address book accessed without your consent. It seems to be occurring more each day, that an email account is accessed without permission and then used to send out spam to people in the email's address book. For the purpose of this poll, if you have multiple accounts that have been compromised (ex. hotmail and yahoo) use either the account that has been compromised more often, if that can be determined, or the account you consider your primary email account.
Yes years ago when I was dumb enough to have AOL Bloat on my computer my Email was hacked and sent over 500 hundred Nudy pictures out in a few minutes time and of course my account was suspended. I was threatened by a few to be reported to the authorities. I am Certainly glad it was adult nudy picture's or my door would have been busted down. After I spoke to AOL they realized it was pretty impossible for me to send that mail emails out in that short period of time and reinstated my account.I only had a few complaints from people so I guess all the others must have liked them even Lips drooling maybe. BTW I had no address book So All this was to complete strangers.
I know a couple people that had this happen and as it turns out they dumb down there passwords because it was either to much work to input into their smart phone, tv, etc. or because of device restrictions. I had a similar issue, when we got our smart TV it would only accept a WiFi password half as long as the one I was using. I'm starting to wonder what is the point anymore of teaching security if the hardware we have available makes the task either so impractical people don't bother or shots them down just when they are making an active effort.
Surprisingly, I was never hacked even when I was a noobie using guessable passwords on public computers. I still have my first webmail account from 2000, but have changed the password many, many times since then.
there was not an option for "Almost". one day, i get an email coming from a friend's address, then it says it wants me to enter my hotmail login and password so i can see the pictures my friend is sending me. so i proceed to do the deed... just before i hit Enter i say to meself: "wait a second, i am already logged in Hotmail. Why does it want me to enter it again?" so despite years of hanging out here at Wilders, i almost got tricked into that one. because the email came from a friend. who obviously got her email account hacked in some way.
Phew close call indeed Yeah but only almost, the Wilders nerve alerted you on time Yes that's exactly what happened to my dads account, it started to send out emails by itself. So I simply clicked on the button "My friends account has been hacked" and after a while the account were reset clean and ready to be used again. Though this time I maked sure he chosed a stronger password.
Close call and one of those moments we all have,Kinda like driving and no exactly where your going but at the last minute you almost miss your turn but then the brain kicks in and you hit the brakes and make your turn,no harm done. That is unless some one rear ends you.
hahaha! anyway, it goes to show that the weakest link almost always is the user. you can have protection again drive by malware, have virtualization and whatnot, but a simple social engineering bait like this can cause more damage than 'real' malware.
I agree and while some bait is a dead giveaway not to bite others are real cleaver more so then I am but a little common sense goes a long way.I am not the brightest bulb of the bunch and I can except that, So experience,Common sense and most of the time good judgement has been keeping safe. Thanks to you guys at wilders from everything I learned and learning has been keeping me safe so far.
My yahoo email has been hijacked a couple times. Interestingly, this has happened twice in the last year. After each hijack I checked the email logs and saw that my email was logged in from mobile access. I'm have a suspicion that when some apps store passwords on their own servers and their servers get hacked the email passwords are stolen. I haven't had any problems other than the mobile access hacks.
Almost identical to Dark Shadow`s incident - many years ago with AOhelL, an address on my account got compromised, account suspended and subsequently reinstated. Not since though...to my knowledge anyway.
Recently from my first hotmail account for which i had 123456 password a spam email was sent to my contact lists. I changed since i use last pass most of the passwords but forgot about this one.
I honestly think the majority of "hacked" accounts are "self inflicted". Almost of the instances I know of I suspect it was an easy to guess password or security question that allow the account to be compromised. Or it was because of clicking or opening something they should not have.
Yes, many years ago. I do not know if it was by case or not but after I wrote an email to a newspaper that then was published, I have lost control of my Gmail account. As I was not really aware about security, my Gmail psw was the same of my ebay account, thus also my ebay account was hacked. I was able to get back to my ebay account after a long chat with their support, but never got back my Gmail one.
