I made this in response to a thread asking this question, as I figured a poll would probably be better than a thread. Link to original thread: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=343900 Basically what free AV would you put on a non-tech-savvy person's PC?
MSE is best where FP's and user interaction must be kept to a minimum. Avast is better if the user can deal with occasional prompts.
i have install avast, bitdefender, and zone alarm, on some pcs all three work like charm without problem for non-tech user
From my experience the following freebies may be simple enough for non tech: Avast, Avira, AVG, MSE, Bitdefender, Kingsoft, Baidu. IMHO my favorite CIS is not for non tech.
I believe the whole "MSE because it's the easiest and low FPs" no longer holds up with the advent of Bitdefender Free. As far as false-positives, I'm sure they are unlikely to affect the average user, a system-crashing one can't happen because it won't quarantine system files, and any trivial false-positives will automatically restore when the database is updated and it's rescanned.
I don't usually do recommendations but if a person asked me to install a free AV now, chances are I'll put Avast or MSE on it. That being said, I will tell them upfront that I won't be held responsible if anything goes wrong...
Avast mainly for its reputation of being consistently good and for it's wide range of protection. Note this AV is only for my friends and family. I use something that has less irritating UI.
My vote goes for Avast. The main reason being that Avast handles program updates a lot better than some antivirus software does. When a new version of Avast is released you are asked if you want update to the new version, and if you choose to do so, Avast downloads and installs the new version with no user interaction required. I installed Avast on a friends computer over a year ago. While he is not particuarly tech savvy savy when I looked at his computer a few days ago, he was running the very latest version of Avast. I've seen plenty of cases with other antivirus software where people are runinng outdated version.
I can't remember if I have already replied to this thread as it seems similar to another one. I'd go with MSE.
Avast also a have the advantage of containing a remote assistance module (in version 7 was there, i haven´t tried it yet in the new version) in the free version
No that's because the thread is called "WHAT FREE AV do You Recommend to Your Non-Tech-Savvy Friends/Family"
