Are either one of these apps compatible with other security software (firewall, AV, anti-exe, anti-malware, etc.)?

Are they worthwhile additions to a security setup?

Yes to both. Both are great programs.

Which is a little more user friendly and less disruptive? Is the price about the same for both?

Both have a slight learning curve. DefenseWall is probably easier to use. I have a quick guide on how to use each on my website in my signature. AppGuard is cheaper, $20 for 3 computer license, while DefenseWall is $30 for 1 PC license.

Oh and a big difference is DefenseWall only works on 32-bit computers, while AppGuard works on 32-bit and 64-bit computers.

AFAIK you don't need to activate the DW license, so you can use it on any number of computers.

So how do you go about choosing between the two? Which one offers the broadest scope of protection? And which is easier on resources?

Both are light on resources and equally good in protection (plus the fact A vs B threads aren't allowed here). Just do a trial of each and see which works best for you.

    Guys:

Is it good enough just to run "Defense Wall HIPS+Firewall" as the only resident Firewall - or do I need another firewall to go with it?

I've just acquired and rebuilt a creeky old Celeron and it now even has 2G RAM [ :thumb: ] to run XP with [actually sped up system response very snappy!]

Even so, I'm sure I'll need to keep real-time programs very, very light!

I'm about to put an AV onto it as ILLYA suggests to mop up the crud [Probably Avast 8 - maybe without some of it's shields - o_O ].

I think if it were necessary to put another firewall on top of that again it may be just too much for my little fellow! [I'm leaning towards Comodo free firewall if I really have to].

Sooo, my question is: Is DWFW good enough as the only resident firewall on my system? [PS: I assume DWFW disables Windows XP's firewall - or can I run that as well?]

    -cheers,
    Feandur

DWPF can run alongside any FW. You can run it as the only security on your computer. I did it for some time with no problems at all.

If I wanted to try out AppGuard, will it uninstall easily and cleanly if desired?

    Thanks Solarlynx ! :thumb:

I'll just run it with Avast [and replace Avast's Web shield with ZVL's Exploit Shield ]

I would advise to be careful with DW. Yes, it booletproof. No doubt. However this impenetrable armor can be too heavy for some programs or whole OS. If it doesn't cause any lagging, or it doesn't matter for you then OK.

Yes but it still leaves left overs but nothing that usually harms or interferes with other apps. For example, I have a license for Appguard and if it's uninstalled and then reinstalled at a later time the license information does not have to be re-entered because the information is left over in the registry. If I remember correctly the left overs are Program data and user data and reg keys.

That's why I use snapshot time machine (CTM or Rx) almost on all my PC. I periodically rollback to clean base snapshot. :)
If there is any problem with an app I try I just revert to the snapshot before installation. :D

has anyone tried using defensewall and appguard in the same security set-up?

Just curious to know if they play nice together.

Chances are they would play nice together but it would be a fruitless exercise as they are both policy restriction programs, so there wouldn't be any gain from using both. Either one would provide ample coverage on its own.

Is AppGuard worth using along with Avast Internet Security 8?

I'd like to thank Brandonn for having provided via his link a great explanation of how basically AppGuard works.
I purchased AppGuard after a lot of pondering since a few months, but never completely grasped their (Help) terminology which i think is too much on the 'institutional' side /not easy to understand.
Brandonn clarified the last doubts I had with a few lines.

I've been using AppGuard with Sandboxie with excellent results, and now i even changed Comodo Antivirus from on demand to heuristic
and everything is ok, considering that AppGuard protects the MBR as well I think it would be hard for malware to bypass.
(Running a Router and comodo Firewall on top of that)

joffy- avast 8 has a lot of things, but I think that if you give the necessary permissions inside AppGuard it could work fine.

I had both running together without any problems at one time here on Xp home 32-bit. But as pegr has pointed out there is really nothing to gain from running both together from a security standpoint.

AppGuard provides protection against the kind of zero-day threats that antivirus programs tend to miss. I am using it in conjunction with avast! Free Antivirus 8 with no problems.
