Shadow Defender 1.2 didnt last that long as the rebooting thing made alitle unsure cause this pc is always on with no reboots so it wasnt convinient for my taste :) good program but maybe sandboxie will be a better idea

Thanks for the explanation, and the heads up on SD not actually preventing malware. I was definitely misled by the vendor's own website.
Your setup and reasoning are top-notch.

Added Bitdefender AV free. No slow down from the Web Shield like avast. Now I have to hope that it doesn't eat all my system files. :cautious:

Yes. I was running Zemana free. Uninstalled it, but had second thoughts. Reinstalled it, updated it, then disabled automatic updates. I then went to my firewall, and blocked Zemana outbound IP any to IP any. Just don't want my dam information floating around in cyberspace.

I think Avast has gotten a little better at some of the things it was marginal in doing. The cloud updates seem to have helped. It caught a rootkit the other day while I was online behind Sandboxie. Surprised me, because I have been running Avast forever, and to the best of my knowledge, thats the first time it has ever caught a rootkit on my box. Believe me, I will remain with Avast. I still think it's the best overall.

That can happen when you image/reimage too. In fact v5 of Macrium Reflect almost hosed my box once, so I went back to trusty 4.2, which never let me down. That's 1 more time than SD has let me down.

PS- Not to mention, that I keep images on hand as well.

It's always the AV I recommend to other people and put on their boxes. People that maybe couldn't handle an outbound FW, HIPS, sandboxing/virtualization apps, etc... because it's fully featured.

But I wish they made a "lite" version for people like me that want nothing but a resident file shield & on demand scanning (of course). Nothing in the options except to toggle the resident protection & auto updating on/off, and type of scan (quick/thorough). If such a real-time AV existed... I'd probably even consider using it.

Sadly, MSE is the closest thing there is to it. Only it's detection rates are garbage and it runs like crap on XP.

I want less "shields"/"guards", and worthless gimics like file shredders... and more attention paid on doing what an AV was designed to do in the first place. Strong resident file protection to stop/block malware from executing on your box. And strong heuristics so that even if it's not in the defs I may still be covered (0 days). Screw all the extra fluff. All it's doing it weighing by box down, chewing on my HD, slowing my internet connection, and causing conflicts with my other real-time apps (like outbound firewalls).

    ... please excuse the rant

Avira Free/Paid comes closest to your requirements
strong signature based detection , but sadly Proactiv(HIPS) isn't available in x64 yet
But you could get a solid Heuristic based protection from Firewalls like Online Armor Free/ Comodo :)

I know in version 7 you could do a "custom" install and choose what shields you wanted to install. I'm pretty sure you still can in V8 too.
