Which tracking protection you like more?

What is the best tracking protection extension? I am aware of only 3:

AVG Do Not track

Do Not Track me plus

Ghostery

I have read rumors here and there around wilders about people not trusting Ghostery and Albine DNT+. I do like DNT more because it requires no configuration. I am curious thou which one you guys like more and why?

 

I like Ghostery on my mac and I could pause it simply by clicking on the Blue Ghost if I need to do so.

 

Disconnect and Collusion, Collusion for chrome is even more powerful than the Firefox version.

What's the difference between disconnect and the other 3?

 

I block the most frequently encountered trackers from my locally hosted DNS server (Unbound), and use AdBlock Plus for Firefox to weed out some of the less used ones (I'm not aiming for 100% percent blocking, I just try to avoid the most obnoxious trackers).

 

i use Collusion extension on chrome. thats it for tracking protection for me.

 

I am using Ghostery at the moment but it seems Facebook seems to track me with it. Do you have a download link so I can install "disconnect" offline so I can try that..?

 

Disconnect is all three modules in one, it also protects against widget jacking by forcing all social widgets to use SSL for transmitting our data online which is a bonus as most of widgets don't use SSL by default.

 

Why is disconnect not found under the FF extension search? Also you don't think DNT+ blocks google, twitter and facebook?

 

I've used DNT+ and Ghostery in the past, but they haven't made my list of add-ons to keep in a while. At present, I'm managing my website interaction with:

NoScript + Request Policy + Adblock Plus + Self-Destructing Cookies

If your uncomfortable writing rules for adblock plus, then i'd suggest running the addon anyways. You can always use the inspect element feature built into firefox to hide or delete elements such as ads, pop-ups, register to view content pop-ups, etc. I tend to view privacy as more then just cookie management and pop-up control. So use what you feel comfortable with.

 

Have you found any blocking limitations in the (latest?) Request Policy? Any case where you'd want it to block something but it doesn't? Such as not blocking a domain if you click on a link to that domain, not blocking a domain if the origin site redirects to it, stuff like that?

Alright I did a little bit of testing on my own. Seems that Self Destructing Cookies can block all the cookies that are blocked by Ghostery, DNT+ and Disconnect Me. So I have uninstalled DNT+ and Cookie Monster and replaced it with Self Destructing Cookies.
One thing that self destructing cookies miss is the flash cookies. I use Better Privacy for that.

So my set up is now:
- Self Destructing Cookies
- Better Privacy
- Disconnect Me

I decided to keep Disconnect me just to have some real time protection against tracking. It feels significantlly lighter than DNT or Ghostery which were both slowing down my FF to a crawl.
Right now I can surf whatever and wherever I want and CCleaner cookies manages comes up clean

I have been using Ghostery on Chromium portable and have been very pleased with it so far.

 

Not personally myself, but my browsing habits do not necessarily match yours. So the best advise is give it a run. Visit the sites you frequent and experiment. I generally look to NoScripts default list for ideas of sites when I'm setting up request policy and even UAControl on a new computer. This way sites like Mozilla function properly, but that's my personal choice. The great thing about this kind of add-on is the control you gain.

 

On Chrome I use SafeScript - Collusion - Ad Block - Disconnect - Tab cookies for anti-track/privacy I have also book marked dragon://settings/cookies foe ease of access.
On Cyberfox I use NoScript - Self Destructing Cookies - Better Privacy - Ad Block Edge - Ghostery
I prefer collusion for chrome over Ghostery I have found it does a better job at blocking, I also like Tab Cookies as it deletes the cookie when the tab is closed similar to SDC.
Of all add ons and extensions I think anti-tracking/blocking apps can slow the browser down the most, however I feel I have got a happy medium on both browsers with this config.
Also I generally always run virtualised so am happy that no local traces are left over.

 

I don't use DNT+ I just enable DNT in the browser settings.
I'm not sure why FF doesn't have the unified Disconnect like Chrome does
I do know that Collusion and Disconnect have the same authors and Collusion for Chrome has far more functionality, I suspect it could be something to do with not been able to combine the three on FF, just guessing

 

I use DNT+, I find it's pretty good at blocking trackers. Well worth the download.

Previously when I have used it I found it not quite as good as Ghostery and heavier on the system.

Working very well on GC...

 

DNT+ works well and it does block facebook and google. You can also block more by going to options unchecking abline's recommendations and turning the slide to block all trackers.
However explosive cookies is much lighter on my system and doesn't slow down the browsing as much.
Each to their own.

 

The simple checkbox in the options for FF telling sites not to track me.

A bunch of about:config tweaks, including all caching disabled.

Adblock Plus & Element Hiding Helper (which I apply liberally on all frequent/favorited sites)

NoScript

RequestPolicy

CSLite Mod

Ixquick search engine

... I don't use Facebook, or anything Google except Youtube... via HTTPS.

That about does it for me. Used to love BetterPrivacy too until Firefox started handling flash cookies like any other cookie, making it rather redundant.

In my experience I find Firefox and it's variants a lot easier to harden when it comes to privacy/tracking, Chromium in my case Comodo Dragon is a bit more tricky, still possible but the range of extensions doesn't get close to the Firefox's add ons not to mention the inability to tweak about:config. I do however feel that recently Chrome extensions are heading in the right direction. ScriptSafe which is constantly been developed and is getting closer to NoScript and Collusion for Chrome been two good examples.
Apologies in advance for stating the obvious... but I also think that it's critical when using Chromium to stay away from Google Chrome, all the extensions in the world aren't going to prevent GC from phoning home. Following along these lines I wonder if there would be any privacy benefit by been able to permanently disable SPDY if so how do I do it ?
What other internal Chromium tweaks are they ? This is as close to about:config as I can get in chrome - dragon://net-internals/#hsts
