It uses the same signatures, that's for sure. And the same cloud, I believe.
Remember this free version only stores a local cache of signatures but not the full set found in the paid products.

Sounds like you installed TrafficLight instead of Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition.

More likely he/she installed Paid Bitdefender Antivirus 2013 as I believe it includes the Traffic Light toolbar thingy.

Is the web blocking feature of trafficlight as effective as the antivirus.?

I would guess yes, as they probably share the same database. I'm sure Iulika0069 can let us know.

Here is an amateur YT test of Traffic Light alone, take it for what it's worth:

Gave this a try and it's running around 55k for one of the process. Is this normal is does it chill out after updating and running a scan?

It does. Just let it run for a bit. Try rebooting after first full scan. That's it. After that, it's so quiet and unobtrusive that you'll want to throw something at it to make sure it's working.

Just to point out 2 things:
    1) Quarantined items cannot be restored.
    2) After neutralizing/disinfecting something, the GUI will keep telling you that the threats were cleaned. This is a bug and will be fixed in the next update according to the dev team.

Ok. Thanks Atomomega. I was hoping that 50K wasn't it's operating level. I think I'll wait for the next release. Sounds like there will be a few fixes.

You're welcome. Next version should bring bugfixes and (hopefully) that quarantine recovery option, that keeps people away from trying it. We'll see.

My only reason I cannot see those green dots. I don't like at all to see an intrusive antivirus. I'm sorry but I don't understand fine. If I switch "Search Advisor" to Off, will surfing be not protect fine against infected files?
    Thanks

    What? I don't understand you.
If I don't disturb you I'd like to ask: I don't see the automatic option to scan my hard drives. In other words: I'd like Bitdefender scans my hard drives Thursday at 6:00 pm o' clock.
    Thanks again one.

Yes, it is quite heavy right after installation, but once it builds up its cache, it's invisible. I sometimes check its logs and found it ran scans I didn't even notice were running! :thumb:

I just wish it worked alongside other programs like COMODO (note that I ran AppGuard with it with no problems).

No problem. :) I meant that you are not using the Free version of Bitdefender, cause in the Free version, there's no options for surfing protection. nor it does let you schedule scans.
Most likely you installed a different Bitdefender product, like Antivirus Plus, Internet Security or Total Security.

I was very happy to see this. There has been debate for a long time regarding the best free antivirus, and none of them really pulled away with it. They all had mediocre to above average detection rates and varied in resource consumption (which is what the deal-breaker was for me and why I went with Panda Cloud initially)
But now we have a high-quality free antivirus with good detection rates and it is lightweight. Oh and it is x64 compatible. I believe the "best free antivirus" debate just ended quite abruptly. Also to confirm per the small text on the download site, "Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition uses the same antivirus technology included in Bitdefender Internet Security 2013.":thumb:

Sure, if you're ok with it automatically quarantining everything and having to jump through hoops to manually restore false positives.
