Oh, I misunderstood you before.

With both enabled, you see the upper ad. But, that only shows that there's a conflict between the DNTme addon and TPLs, doesn't it? o_O

Otherwise, let's recapitulate: With DNTme disabled and TPL enabled, that ad, also in your case, is blocked. But, as soon as we reenable DNTme (by the way, we have to restart IE for the addons to be enabled back), that ad appears.

In my book, this means that they aren't entire compatible. If there were no issues of whatsoever, then the ad would still be blocked with DNTme enabled. Which clearly isn't the case.

What do you mean with not fully reloading the TPL when it starts? I don't normally use Internet Explorer, so I'm not that familiar with all the mechanics involving the TPLs, but is that something you have noticed or is it documented? I'm asking, because I'd expect that TPLs are fully loaded when the user starts the browser... :doubt:

    I totally agree with you.

When looking over the procmon log I captured after forcing IE9 to update a TPL (note: launched one instance of IE9 to a homepage of about:blank, just waited for the TPL download) I caught a glimpse of what appeared to be caching related activity. The first thought that popped into my mind was that it might be routine caching that would occur when downloading any file and it wouldn't have bearing on TPL use. I was in a hurry and didn't follow up on that though.

I'm inclined to think, like you it seems, that if you update the "master" local TPL file that should work. For a moment, though, I got to thinking about potential gotcha cases. Partly because of what I mentioned above but mainly because of general thinking, the thought occurred to me that *theoretically* there *might* be something else going on which could prevent IE from picking up those changes.

If IE updates the TPL file, it definitely would know if/when the "master" local TPL file changes. Theoretically, it could do some work only when things change in that manner so as to save some work and time during say normal startups. Parsing TPL file textual rules to create separate allow and deny list data being a purely theoretical example.

Hm, I noticed that Fanboy Adblock List hasn't updated since 2 Mar 2013 in IE9.

I removed it and re-installed it. Same date! Seems it's no longer maintained.

Is there another Adblock TPL available for IE9, soon to be IE10?

I've got Easy Privacy on it and it seems to update fine.

    Thanks.

Yup, saw it, I do get email notifications of my own posts and ones that I subscribe to. Looks like the MVP in question was after post count rather than quality as I'm not seeing anything new that's not already in *this* thread.

All TPL's I'm using are refreshing as I indicated Here.

In that post you described a MANUAL refresh of the TPLs. What people are interested in is whether AUTOMATIC refreshing works after you did the MANUAL refresh. If you could clarify that it would save people (including all those who come to this thread via the link you posted at the Microsoft answers page) time.

Edit: It would be good if someone else who has IE10 also tests it and comments on their experience. In case the results are dependent on some other factor.

Working on something more definitive on automatic updates under IE 10 with existing TPL's.

So far, since this thread was started, some TPL's refresh automatically, some don't - when I have more, I will post back more as soon I have details to expand on this.

Having to manually update (removing and replacing a specific TPL) would be a bummer.

Thank you for commenting on what you are seeing WRT automatic refreshes. I thought/think it is important for readers to know if they could manually refresh their TPLs then walk away with confidence that they'll automatically update after that. Judging from what you said it sounds like they can't :( Thank you for you efforts in general, too :)

In regards to someone else's comment elsewhere about expiration times and having to wait several days to see if any automatic updates occur:

    1) The "Stop Google Tracking" TPL published by Microsoft (laugh) has Expires=1

    2) You can create your own TPL (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh273399(v=vs.85).aspx) for testing and/or actual use. For fun I just did this, files attached (.txt appended to their names for uploading, strip before use). Worked OK with IE9 when hosted on a remote private server.

While testing the above I timed it... after "telling" IE9 a TPL needs updated via the registry mod mentioned elsewhere, I launched IE9 and 1 minute after launch it actually retrieved the TPL file.

FWIW, I eventually allowed IE10 to install. The first IE10 to touch my Windows 7 x64 machine. I chose to update when there were no TPLs installed. After the update was complete and I ran some basic tests, I then installed the EasyList TPL. That was 8 days ago, that computer has been on many of those days, and IE10 has been run numerous times especially during the past two days. The EasyList TPL has an expires of 4 so it should have been updated. It hasn't been.

They very well may not. Perhaps it's because IE 11 is due soon, perhaps it's a hint of a coming attitude against ad and tracking blockers like Google has taken. No way to tell unless MS speaks up.

Personally, I don't care about "perhaps......, perhaps....."
I only know that is a fact: IE10 does not allow the TPL to work properly (TPL auto update) in it.

*shrug* Well, you might not care, but guessing is all you're going to get until Redmond its mouth or somebody gets an inside scoop. Considering the way MS handled IE 10 for Windows 7, I wouldn't at all be surprised if the bugs of 10 is taking a backseat to the release of 11.

I'm going to get spanked over this, but...

... I think they don't give a crap about it, because soon pretty much no one will give a crap about Windows, judging by the looks of it (Windows 8, Blue, 9, etc)...

So, why bother with TPLs working? :D Worthless effort.

In IE11 they are bringing TPLs to the Metro version of IE. My guess is they have all the development on IE11 and "don't give a damn" about fixing this for IE10.

Hopefully that fixes this bug. As long as IE11 comes to Windows 7, that is... :D

Windows 8 is slooooowly creeping its way into more usage, but not enough so that IE 11 on Windows 7 won't be worth bothering with. We're talking likely less than a year before it's released to the public on "Blue"/Windows 8. That OS won't shoot to 10/20% usage in that short of time, so Windows 7 should certainly have it. However, it doesn't mean we won't wait nearly 2 years again to get it.

In the final analysis, TPL's under IE 10, don't refresh automatically

How does one screw up such a simple feature that was working OK in the previous version *and* not fix it within a reasonable amount of time? Has anyone found evidence to support the idea that this issue has a non-malicious, technical origin (such as a coding mistake or platform incompatibility issue)? Has anyone even seen something resembling a proper public response to the issue? An acknowledgement in a forum by a Microsoft developer or a KB article alerting people to the issue or something like that?

Sure, one could imagine and assume that a bug slipped into the code and it isn't a high priority. Then again, one could imagine and assume that Microsoft purposely created the problem for "business reasons". As a means of luring people to "IE11 only for Windows 8.x", reducing the effectiveness of TPLs (auto-updating is crucial) that impede targeted advertising, whatever. There comes a point where it is difficult to go with the first assumption and the second assumption starts to make more sense. I personally am leaning towards the second assumption, but would welcome some "evidence" to help make a better judgement.

    Got any?

Considering that when TPLs were first introduced that was - I believe - a bit of a hype started by Microsoft (user privacy rights and all that), I have a hard time believing that a "bug" such as this one wouldn't be solved in a short period of time; it probably wouldn't take more than a few seconds solving it. So, I got to wonder.

Heck, it even came to the point of Microsoft create a TPL just to block some of the Google tracking (the cookie bypassing thing, remember?). So, due to all of this, I got to wonder myself as well.

Has anyone considered the possibility of the bug being in the lists (lack of adaption to some new/changed function, etc)?
