Avast looks like it was made for a 5 year old?

Im sorry but I couldn't help myself. Avast with its fancy graphics seriously looks like it was made flashy to look attractive for a 5 years old. Can't we just get a regular conservative theme. No weird looking city icons with telephone wires connecting to the cloud.
Same goes for the spinning ball that is annoying the heck out of me. Sure there is that option to stop animation. But how is a spinning ball suppose to represent a security software
It might be pretty damn good antivirus but this whole theme is just turning me off.

 

Maybe the voice helps some of these lonely geeks through the night.

 

Don't get me started on that one. My parents for some odd reason keep the voice on and every time I skype them I get to hear avast updating. I am at the point of almost going to uninstall that AV from their computer so that I won't have to hear it updating.

 

1. Point your mouse at the orange globe with the lower-case "a" in your system tray. Click on the globe to open the user interface.

2. Click on "Settings" in the upper-right corner of the avast! user interface screen. The settings window will open.

3. Click on the check mark next to "Animate the Icon while scanning" under the "Appearance" section. The check-mark will be removed.

4. Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window. Click the "X" box in the upper-right corner to close the avast! user interface.

 

Isn't there also an option to disable sounds on Avast?

 

Of course there is.
Looks like our friend hasn't tried to search and check all available options/settings.

 

Sorry but you don't know much about interfaces if you think it's made for 5 year olds... apart from smiley (which i think it's a nice and fresh touch) every bit of it looks on a professional level, especially since they haven't gone for the stupid Metro thing.

I'm not sure why are the cloud animations bothering you so much? They are there for ages and to be honest i like the new ones more than i did the old ones. It just looks better.

And the animated icon. Guess what, it's there ever since i can remember. And i didn't like it ever since i can remember. Thats why there is a setting which stops it from spinning... Spinning is representing scanning. Every time it checks a new file the ball rotates. It's just that.

 

I think it's fine. The only thing that is definitely "different" is the smiley.

 

Perfect GUI for me ... Will never understand why people are crying about an interface. Avast's one is perfectly laid out.

 

When I install Avast I always turn off the voice and the spinning ball. I agree, the mentioned city icon is childish but I guess you didn't know the old mp3 player skin.

 

If a 5 year old can use it, then virtually everyone on a computer can. Making it easy to use is a strength that will increase the amount of users.
Spinning ball represents activity, like if it's scanning something. How does something like that annoy you, is the tray (hidden icons) that distracting?
The sounds are optional, depends on whether you like it or not.

Since when is a theme more important than performance, effectiveness, extensibility, etc.? If it turns you off, there's no need to even open it after setting up everything.

 

Believe it or not, most Avast's users like the sound the graphics the colors the animated cloud ... As said above this helps to increase the users base.

 

It's so funny when ppl tag something as childish. What defines childish? After looking at the city graphics i cannot think of word "childish" at all. Ppl should seriously start using dictionary and stop using words they don't understand.

 

I think he means that pictures are like in picture books for kids, why do you need pictures if your an adult that can read. I do agree that pictures and flashy graphics are childish sometimes as to draw in people that are too stupid to read and understand without them and would solely choose a product by looking at the UI and not the actual logic behind the program or the developer.

Myself personally would be happy if my antivirus was effective and had a very minimal UI with just plain-text and tabs. Why? less memory and CPU use and a smaller file size, and a simple to navigate panel without the extra stuff.

I get where he is coming from, from that sense.

 

I think it actually is a little Metro-like on the home screen, with its single-color tiles.

 

Metro with rounded edges on all possible elements? I must be getting mad and blind if that looks anything like metro in any way... for me it's more like big button interfaces everyone were so mad about few years ago. AVG's interface is Metro obsessed, but avast!'s not even by a chance.

Metro has:
- single colored tiles
- tiles and all elements have rectangular shapes with sharp corners
- no complex graphics

avast! has none of that anywhere and if you think that few big buttons make it have Metro looks or feel then dear god you are all mistaken...

 

- single colored tiles (Has these, (1) Green (6) Grey)
- tiles and all elements have rectangular shapes with sharp corners (Softening the corners of rectangles does not make them a different shape)
- no complex graphics ((1) Picture of your logo in the background does not a complex graphic make, and the rest is simple and metro)

Let's just call it (Hipster Metro) with tabs and rounded corners on rectangles. Its still metro how ever you look at it.

I really like the new UI. Old one (v7) was good but I do like this one a bit more. Yes, it takes some time to get used to it, but I think in general it's more professional and stylish.

 

Actually, after we set the options when we first install Avast!, how often do we access the GUI? Who cares what it looks like. As for the rotating ball, I like it because it tells me Avast! is working. The voice has a certain interactive coolness to it to give the illusion that Avast! is communicating with you, and even if you're looking away you know you've been updated.

 

I like the GUI of avast. Actually, I like anything that has fancy graphics since it conveys a certain level of polish and professionalism.
