I think that's one of the disadvantages using a cloud AV: Extremly slow scans - although Panda Cloud AV scans are a bit faster. :p

In my experience, antiviruses that use the cloud are faster with regards to scanning.

I don't undertstand why would you run an on-demand scan with ANY av. If you want to check if you got hit by malware (assuming your current resident av didn't catch it on-access) try an on-demand scanner, like Hitman Pro, Malwarebytes or whatever you want.

After installing an AV on a computer I always start a full scan. I don't know if it's really necessary but it doesn't hurt. It's one of my hobbies to run on demand scans. :D :D

    Another suggestion:
What do you think about a warning pop up if a threat is detected? I think it would be better than a message in the systray. :doubt:

Is auto scan really necessary? :doubt: Which files are scanned in auto scan mode? :doubt:

Is it me or there used to be an offline installer? I can't find it anymore.

Did BitDefender remove the offline installer and there's only an online installer now? o_O

I see, I got a message "Auto scan cycle completed". I hope the continuous scanning is over now. :)

I think I recall downloading the offline* installer when the English version first came out. I deleted the link from the download manager, unfortunately. My memory rarely fails me. :argh:

    * It had a few MBs of size, so I doubt it was the online installer which is only a few KBs.

    =>

    For x86
    http://download.bitdefender.com/npd/free/Antivirus_Free_Edition_x86.exe
    (8,24 MB)

    For x64
    http://download.bitdefender.com/npd/free/Antivirus_Free_Edition_x64.exe
    (8,73 MB)

These are online installation kits, it won't work if the system is not connected to the internet.
For now, offline kits are not available

Since everything is scanned on access by BD Free, I have turned off the auto scan feature on all of my installs. I don't need, or want BD to scan files that are just sitting there, doing nothing. I never allow any AV to do auto scans, but that's just me.

Bitdefender should hire 7anon, superior support! :D

I'm thinking about that too, I don't want to kill the harddisk drives soon. ;)

Most AVs have other settings checked when you perform an OD scan since having them checked on on-access may effect the performance in a negative way.

By other settings on OD scans I mean deeper scanning, advanced heuristics etc etc....

Yes, I did see and read that post, but didn't bother checking the links when a BitDefender moderator mentioned they are online installers.

Now, this may be a crazy question, but why the bloody hell would someone develop a 8+ MB online installer? o_O Or, by online installer it's meant that it will need an Internet connection for something else (*malware definitions)? Don't pretty much all antimalware apps need such connection to the Internet? **

And, if those are online installers, then why develop another online installer of only 158 KB? o_O

Then again, maybe I have a different definition of what an offline installer is. When comparing one "online installer" to another online installer, I'd say the latter is the online installer, to me anyway.

    Crazy indeed. o_O

    -edit-

** In one way or another, people will need to get the malware definitions, either on their own computer or somebody else's computer (and Internet connection).

This is off topic but is Bitdefender supposed to be pronounced Bytedefender?

Just a goofy question I thought of this morning.

No. It's BitDefender. Bit as in bit, Defender as in defender.
