Not to mention the fact that you don't even have to BE on a website to pick up a virus or malware. I remember a few years back, there was a virus out there that specifically targeted computers running XP and Mozilla Firefox. It got me. Turned my computer on one day, and- POOF!! Bluescreen city, wasn't even on a website. I was thinking WTF just happened?? Had to start from scratch, had no imaging, had to do it the long painful slow way.

 

Lol. That's cause people like to see what everyone else is doing. Almost like a social network in itself.


Removed EMET, something has been causing problems with my firefox and I need to find out what. I supsect EMET could have something to do with it.

I have had drag on my box from almost every antivirus and firewall that I have set tight. I think it's a balancing act. I have taken to running FreeRAM XP Pro, gotta tell you that little program works well. I don't USB anything, it's all on my box. And although I really like Sandboxie, it does nothing to prevent slowdowns from unknown script. Sometimes I have to just terminate SB and start fresh. As everyone who runs XP probably knows by now, it doesn't matter what apps you are running on it, you will reboot, reboot, reboot, restart, restart, restart. I DO stay with Avast, however, because of the script shields, and Email shields. It might not be the number one antivirus app but it sure covers all of the bases. I DO have a lot of respect for Bitdefender, however. It's a dam stout antivirus/

 

Yeah, but....there are gazillions of us still running XP. Some major corporations use Windows servers with XP imbedded. XP is everywhere.....

 

Not quite...that may have been true a few years ago, however, malware writers have been targeting Apple and Linux systems recently. And Microsoft has done a pretty good job with patches and updates. The tide is turning. There is no such thing as a safe system anymore.

Running Qubes OS with the following sandboxes:

1) Personal - Used to login into any accounts online etc. - Can only access websites that I login to (Firewall VM blocks all other connections and force HTTPS on most).

2) Untrusted - Any other web browsing, searching, etc. Just incase I run into trouble.

3) Disposable VM - Used for ALL PDFs and untrusted sites.

4) Vault - NO internet access - used for GPG keys.

5) Full Disk Encryption (AES-256-XTS using LUKS)

Love Qubes OS for it's Sandboxing structure.

Dev Box

Running Ubuntu 12.10

1) UFW Enabled - Blocks all traffic accept to Ubuntu repo's and git.

2) Apparmor - enabled all profiles (default)

3) Full Disk Encryption (AES-256-XTS using LUKS)

Password/Key box

Lowpower laptop running from Live Ubuntu 12.10 disk:

1) Live usb - Clears memory on shutdown
2) NO NETWORKING at all (no data leaks or exploit risk)
3) Pulls/stores data on encrypted 1TB drive (TrueCrypt). Used for storing GPG Master key (which signs my daily key(s).) This key NEVER touches the network.


Network

1) Running 3 SSIDS: Green Zone (My Stuff Only), Yellow Zone (Any media devices that may be insecure (aka XBMC HTPC, PS3, etc.) and Red Zone (Friends). Each SSID is running on an entirely different Subnet with no access to eachother (IPTables).

2) Using WPA2 Enterprise on the first two Zones and WPA2 PSK on the Red Zone.

3) IPS/IDS - Snort monitors for external and internal intrusions

4) IPTables Blocks ALL traffic coming from china, middle east, and Russia.

5) Raspberry pi Running kismet and a custom script probe for rouge AP's (Like WiFi pineapple's and such).

 

Huh? I've never restarted other than for Windows updates usually. So unfortunately I can't keep the system up for more than 60-80 days usually. But it's really no different after 2 months than after a fresh boot. And I don't log off/back on during that time either...
