I have just 60 days left to use the closed beta... Is there a way to increase this time and remain a beta tester as i am right from the start?
    Joe any help please;) ?

    Cheers,
    Herve

    EDIT:
I have 3 official WSA Essentials licenses purchased in 2012 but never used... If i enter one of them , will i lose my beta tester membership? o_O Sniff ;)

    Hello Herve,

The Beta is not determined by the key but from the Download location.

There are two aspects of Beta.
1: The beta agent track. This is determined by the download location as other folks have said. As long as you were on the original By Invite beta and have that URL and the Beta track is updated as a beta track, it will work.
2: Free beta keys for By Invite Testers. These have -BETA- as the second group of letters in the code and have certain base capabilities. These were given out as a courtesy and only Webroot can say whether they will be able to continue to extend them freely or not.

The Beta agent will work with any key, it doesn't require a beta key. If I were Webroot, I'd look at whether the feedback on this forum* is worth the 700+ beta keys given out for free (So at least $28,000 worth of free product).

(*I expect that there is other value beyond feedback in this forum. The whole case is evaluated based on the whole group most likely.)

Sorry but what you have written is not what i call a kind message. I have NOT robbed the beta key:mad:. On the contrary, at the same time i was beta testing, i kept buying OFFICIAL keys. I leave it up to you to recalculate your fanciful amount of money ($28000) and substract what i paid.. I don't think i'm the only one by far to have behaved like this, for sure.. NOW you know how to spend your spare time: calculating, calculating, evaluating each beta tester and the number of his feedbacks etc... How pleasant your life will be!:D

In short, your remark is unuseful, arrogant, disrespectful towards all the beta members except for you of course lol and here in France, you would be required to apologise by a mod.
Anyway i'm not mad at you but please think twice before writing... Thanks.

    Cheers,
    Herve

Herve, this is not a personal attack. At no point did I say that you robbed the product. I said that they gave away around $28,000 worth of free service to hundreds of people for the purpose of beta testing. That's Beta Testing, not "free cool stuff" or "free because you buy other stuff" or "free stuff because you think we're cool" ("you" is plural to all the beta testers there).

All I was doing was pointing out that the beta keys are not free handouts just because they can. They have a purpose and they have a cost to the company. The company absorbs this cost in order to get the specific benefit of the purpose. I seriously doubt that there would be any micro-analysis of the beta testers. What you did, what TH does, what any individual beta tester does is unlikely to be viewed on its own except in good light. More likely, the whole of the beta group would be looked at as a whole and a decision to extend licenses may be based on that.

Again, I'm describing what I would do if I was looking at the case. I don't have all the data to look at the case. I don't know how many beta licenses are being actively used, for example. That would impact the cost to the company, reducing it if there are not as many in use. I don't know what data beyond the obvious information in this forum is returned. That can have intrinsic value.

    Main summary though:
The beta program can be discontinued or extended as they see fit. No beta tester has any intrinsic right to the courtesy keys. The best way to encourage continuation of the beta is to provide a benefit specifically as a beta tester and avoid any appearance of coercion ("I buy lots of this because I'm a beta tester" is a bad way to approach it, basically ;) ).

So be the best beta tester possible. Remember that beta testing is a license in return for providing extended testing on live systems and providing feedback, so nobody is really getting it for free.

Amusing note: Knowing what the software does, how it operates, and the way beta testers operate, in retrospect I wouldn't worry about cost or return. I'd just make a small change to the release version of the software: Make it impossible to run the beta keys on anything but the beta release. ;) Then it's either guaranteed testing or no use of the license and thus no cost. :)

I'm not sure what the policy is for our beta customers but I'll find out ASAP and let everyone know! It is amazing how time flies though, with everyone having about 60 days left.

i am among the first closed-beta testers so my beta license was renewed automatically via email with a new key some times before the expiration of the first one.

i think it will be the same again.

I've just heard back internally - we will be adding 365 days onto all of the closed beta tester license keys as a thank you for all of your hard work and help in the beta program.

    Thanks again!

That's very generous gift for which all the closed beta users will be surely grateful. Thank you very much, indeed. You can trust we will do everything to help Webroot with WSA as much as possible :)

That's really nice of Webroot! :thumb: - But if you should decide later against it I personally wouldn't have any problem with that too. - Simply because like others I do own always enough regular licenses of WSA to keep the beta running. ;) - The important thing to me is not so much the free beta key (though I do appreciate it!) but the ability to run always the latest beta version which was in the past for me more stable than released versions of other security products. - So I am very happy as it is. ;)

And some kind of cyber friendship?

    HI TechRenard1976:) ,

I'm smoking the peace pipe, right now :D
Your previous post explaining CLEARLY what you intended to mean seemed to me sensible, justified and i couldn't but agree with you. So, please, accept the apologies of an impulsive guy like me.
I respect you because instead of embittering the debate, you remained calm and tried to settle the trouble between us with relevant and lucid arguments. THANKS!

As for JOE, what to say when facing so much kindness and generosity...i'm speechless. The only words that i can pronounce are: THANK YOU JOE!:thumb:

    Cheers,
    Herve

But... But almost nobody knows what "Reynard" means. :p

Really, though, it's okay. Text is the worst possible communication medium, so the idea in one person's head may not always match what the text puts in another's. I figured I just didn't come across clearly, so I tried to clarify. :) Then less grumpiness and all is better. That's much better than "more grumpiness and all is bitter". ;) Isn't it awesome to be valuable too?

Better get a move on then, I keep getting the following messages every time I open my browser. Note that the tray icon is greyed out with an exclamation mark in an orange circle and even if I open up an https site there is no lock. It would appear that protection is working but I'm not prepared to trust it.
    Anyone else seeing this?

We should have them bumped up in duration by next week. I'll let everyone know once it's cleared out from our end :)

    Joe,
My biggest concern here is not the unwanted (unwarranted :cautious:) and unnecessary pop-up - it's the fact that the padlock has now disappeared from the tray icon. Can you confirm that protection is the same, my few tests would seem to indicate that it is, but your confirmation would be welcome.

I wished that webroot developers would be using real keys that make them have the same experience we customers now get: those popups and the orange exclamation mark symbol are horrible, way to annoying and I agree that one can get very pissed if one whole month of a year is looking like this!

It looks like they fear we could not prolong our licenses in time? But since we don't pay by bottle message (having to cross oceans?) I am very sure that we don't need 30 long days being remembered on every single one of them that you want again our money or that we aren't protected anymore "soon". Even 7 days of this currently implemented terror-nagging would be too much for me!

Bring for example one reminder 30 days from expiring of the old license with no other change in look of GUI (keep the green symbol at all circumstances!) and then again every week one popup and the last 3-5 days you can get more visible and in our face somehow. And at least give us a feature to disable those disturbing warnings if you don't want to stop doing this. You could for example allow us to choose "Don't remember me again" in that popup or "Remind me (much) later again" etc.

Honestly, IIRC I was never so annoyed about anything else regarding that matter. It's worse and more intrusive than certain trial-software reminders.

Yes, I want to be remembered that license is expiring, of course! But I don't have Alzheimer's and don't need being hammered by this every minute of my last month! - And the icon (green "W") really has to stay the same until license is expired, don't make people fear they aren't protected as long as they are! Buying a license is a matter of a few minutes online. If you are doing this because of people buying boxes from shelves in retail stores (needing more time than online buyers) please do molest ONLY those people with the mentioned "renew-it-terror". ;)

Thanks Joe for looking into this and probably/hopefully making a change in the way that works now. :thumb:

I agree, we're looking into all of the product messaging across the clients (it gets worse when you get closer to renew...) and part of the 2014 product will be a revamped and improved experience end-to-end.
