Get more juice out of Sandboxie, by only using the paid version to sandbox the browser, you are not getting the full glass.;)

WELL....I have to say it's been a few years since I used Bitdefender free version. It appears to be totally different now. That is a good thing. The version I used in the past had no shields, but the virus detection rate was top of the heap. Maybe I will try the new version. Hope there are not compatibility issues. If this is as good as it looks, it would be the best antivirus app available, and I have tried ALL of them over the years. Fingers crossed.

That's why I use the older version of Comodo firewall. Before everything was bundled. 3.0 22.349

I have made that mistake. Still do not have an answer to it. Any good suggestions?

What would be a good choice for a novice like me to image for backup? On XP Pro? Would it be an external hard drive, or a USB stick? Not worried about sensitive data, would just like to back up my whole system to decrease the amount of time it would take to reinstall everything, updates and all. I have not had a problem for several years, guess it may be due to happen, I don't know.

You could check out this thread for some ideas. Keriver 1 click and Macrium seem to be popular. I've used Macrium a few times before with success.
paragon free is another one that worked well for me, although it's a bit slow.

I'm actually a tad skeptical about 5.12... like what concessions did they have to make to get it to accommodate the Web Shield for Avast? There may be a reason the update wasn't pushed to the internal updater of Comodo FW itself... you had to go to their site to get it. Like they specifically only wanted the people that insisted on using Avast to use it. That makes me think they had to cut some corners, so to speak, to get it to accommodate the Web Shield. And that unless you're using Avast's Web Shield you're better off with 5.10

That may just be paranoia... but some paranoia can be healthy when it comes to this type of stuff. I would advise anyone not using Avast or Avira's Web Shields/Guards to use 5.10.

But Ziltch... if you're comfortable with version 3 and feel it's slimmer and has everything you need, by all means, stick with it. All updates since then have pretty much been for compatibility, stability, and some added features... with Comodo the trusted vendor list too. I seriously doubt it's vulnerable... nor is LookNStop... nor is Kerio 2.1.5. The nature of firewalling/packet filtering hasn't really changed since then. Nor should we expect it to anytime soon.

For backing stuff up, I recommend a Western Digital Elements external hard drive like I have. It's an affordable, simple external HD with no bells and whistles. No preinstalled crap on it. And have a USB stick too for backup to your backup, for really important documents, in case one dies on you. I'd even use a DVD/CD RW too for yet another backup of important docs.

And Macrium Reflect Free is a very simple, light, effective free imaging program I recommend for XP users.

Windows 7/8 users have great integrated imaging already and no real need for a 3'rd party app, other than just for familiarity/comfort reasons.

Reparied my familys old Windows Xp Dell desktop today. Its an old slow machine (only 256 MB ram) however my setup of Panda Cloud + Rising PC Doctor seems to be a good combo for it. It has a fried NIC chip so it has to use an old USB Wifi chip.

When I booted it up today it reported that Windows Security Center was disabled, the Windows Firewall was corrupt, the task manager was only partially working. This was all thanks to an old virus. It also had old Webroot SecureAnywhere and CounterSpy I used as a quick fix for the virus which removed it but did not do much repair.

Somehow by installing Panda Cloud it did a bunch of repairs at install and Windows Firewall came back to life. Windows Security Center was also re-enabled so far so good

Ibrad, Is the Firewall in panda cloud pro more of a program guard or an actual outbound firewall?

In my opinion its more of an actual inbound/outbound firewall from how I look at it. Looking over my log file its blocked a couple of intrusion attacks on each of my machine so it seems to be doing its job pretty well.

Thanks! I was thinking of ditching WSA for the moment and giving it a try.

That is 256MB less than what I got so it's good to know that I am not alone in having too little RAM compared to todays standard :D

I know this is true. If you use free versions of firewalls and antivirus apps like I do, you have to be aware of compatibility issues in later versions, which seem to be intended for bundled use. I have used Kerio, Outpost, etc. They are good standalone firewalls, for sure.

From another thread in here I was just reminded that Comodo 5.12 also addressed compatibility for Win8. So there are other reasons after all to use it other than for Avast.

Good Evening ! Added G-Data 2013 I.S. in tandem with WSA Essentials. Surprised that G-Data isn't introducing any bloat so far...before you can say make it so...G-Data 2014...will arrive...probably April. Sincerely...Securon

Excellent! Decided you wanted some HIPS functionality, eh?... can't say as I blame you. I couldn't live without it now personally ever since laying eyes upon D+... it was love at first sight!
