I am running a test right now, absolutely no AV/Security on a machine to see how fast/stable I can get the box. Ideally I shouldn't even need an AV on this machine. However I was thinking a context (right click) on-demand scanner AV to scan everything downloaded.

Anyone have any recommendations of an AV that can install without a bunch of BS, without a bunch of modules, and will work with a simple right click and NO on-access/realtime junk installed? Windows is surprisingly speedy with nothing installed. Keeping in mind I have enterprise level security at the router (Trend+DPI+ID+IS). Which actually would be sufficient without a software product.

At the moment, I can't think of anything but Avira free, definitely (if you don't mind the latest "ask" issues of course, widely discussed here and there).

    HMP can scan individual files?

I absolutely will not patronize HMP again due to their strict key activation system, which effectively nullifies the product if you reinstall. However if the free version can single-file-scan, then that might be OK.

ClamAV is only an on-demand scanner unless you choose to add real-time protection separately. Detection rates aren't great, but it's open source and free from ads and other annoyances.

Yes, the free version can do a context scan, but only if you select "keep a copy of HMP in your program files". This is not really an install, but rather a copy of an .exe.

Also, MBAM Free fits your criteria.

VT Hash Check is the perfect thing... with the condition that it won't scan anything over 32 MB. So it should work for most things, just not if you're downloading music albums, movies, etc... Lightest setup ever... seriously. A bit of an inconvenience to obtain and add the API key, but once you do, you'll realize how well worth it it was and then some.

This would pretty much make Hitman Pro redundant, since it contains all the engines HMP does too (I'm pretty sure), and then some. As HMP has the same file size limitation. HMP is also a bit heavier, and much slower. The advantage is that HMP will do a full scan of your computer while VTHC will not... but you said right-click/context scans only.

There's Malwarebytes Free. Again, you can do a scan of your entire system with it. While this engine is also included in VTHC, you don't get a file size limitation with it, so I find it useful even though I have VTHC already in my context menu... for files over 32 MB.

I personally have all 3. I use VTHC almost all the time, and in fact have a way to get it to automatically fire for downloads in Firefox. MBAM for things over 32 MB. And HMP has value because I can run a full system scan with it, which I can't do with VTHC. None have any real-time components or have added any noticeable bloat to my box, and I have dated specs.

I also recommend Kaspersky TDSS Killer just to have a potential option against rootkits. It is awesome in that it's very comprehensive, yet also very low in FP's... a fine line difficult to walk for rootkit removers. And like VTHC ultra light. A simple little interface with 2 check boxes, and a button to "Start Scan". VTHC is similar... check boxes to use SSL (recommended), and SHA (not recommended), and a place to put the API key... and that's it! It doesn't get lighter than that.

And TDSS Killer completes a scan in like 20 seconds on my box, if that.

With these 4 scanners I'd say you're good to go, with no footprint added to your box whatsoever.

Negative on HMP, just installed it, no context option in right click, and I checked off keeping a copy on the PC..

After you check "keep a copy" and run the first scan, close the app, open it again from your program files or start menu shortcut, go to settings > scan, and you can now check the context option........Trust me, it's there.

DBone is correct. After installing it there will be an option available that was previously greyed out. Under the "Scan" tab, the bottom-most thing:

Show 'Scan with HitmanPro' for files and folders in Windows Explorer

... that will give you your context menu.

I don't personally bother with that though since, again, VTHC contains every engine Hitman Pro does and many more. HMP has the same file size limitation. And VTHC is much quicker. So I simply have no reason whatsoever to have HMP in my shell/context menu. I use HMP portable only, and do full scans with it about once a month.

I have VTHC & MBAM in my shell/context menu only. The latter being used when files are over 32 MB. And as with HMP, I run a full scan with MBAM about once a month.

IMO, these 4 on demand scanners (TDSS Killer too) are all you need on a box. No real-time components, no footprint, and very comprehensive coverage for both right-click/single, and full scans. And MBAM gives you an offline option. I run scans with it in Safe Mode.

Comodo Cleaning Essentials (CCE) is another option for full scans. I know you were asking for context/shell scanners. But figured since you had several great options in that regard already may want another full scan option.

Extremely light. And it fixes more than just malware. It comes with a handy tool (Killswitch)... I've yet to see a process it won't stop dead in it's tracks. In the event some glitchy process starts using up close to 100% of your CPU and Task Manager won't kill it... this sucker will. Because sometimes legit things a scanner won't detect can act like malware.
