For the past 4 years or so I've been using NOD32 and its been good and as for myself I've been happy with it, now I have 3 days before it expires.

I have a choice to renew it for another 1 or 2 years or to try another good AV either paid or free., either one, if a good paid one I dont mind paying at all and if a good free one I dont mind downloading it and trying it.

Or the other option to go for is a good security suite.

    Any suggestions.

The new Avast seems good. A lot like CIS 6 also.

If you are looking for a powerful security suite no-frills then i'd recommend you Kaspersky Internet Security as its Firewall is actually competent.

however if you like to mix and match (like me)
you could try one of the following combinations

    Comodo FW + Kaspersky AV
    --------------Emsisoft AntiMalware
    --------------Bitdefender Antivirus Plus
    --------------Avast Free
    --------------Avira Free

Needs of people are different. - If you are not doing "dangerous" things and are used to NOT getting infected easily I would suggest to give Webroot Secure Anywhere a try. - That is if you are willing to use a cloud solution, not everyone wants that. - I use WSA because I care very much about how light my system feels, it's my 1st, 2nd and 3d priority! :D I have not special protection needs because I don't do things that are dangerous and I also keep my system always up-to-date etc. so I don't care at all about using always the AV solution with the best "test"-results. - But as I said, everyone is different. ;)

As I take it you like to live in the past? :D

Also if I do renew NOD32 AV is it cheaper to renew it than to actually buy it new.

    Thanks

If you really are using those aged browser versions you should probably get the "best" AV available, it will have a tough job for sure! :D - My hint: get your system up-to-date, use Secunia PSI to find out what to update! ;) - I hope your flash (and java?!?) versions are newer than all the other stuff. :D

My suggestions are Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast (free) or Webroot SecureAnywhere (paid).

Symantec, BitDefender, Kaspersky, Avira, AVG, Eset, etc, solutions are also generally good rated by reputable testing labs (Av-Test, Av-Comparatives, Virus Bulletin, etc) and popular tech media (PC Mag, CNET, etc).

You'd better update your signature. At the top of the forum, click on the User CP and update the info.

My opinion about your initial question:

Don't rush to renew NOD32 - you can trial it for free for 30 days. You can make an image of your machine and trial different security products, then use your system image to revert back your machine to a state before installing the AV. Try the free AVs first, then if you don't like any of them - try paid products. Don't pay too much attention on the tests made by testing organizations - consider your own opinion and experience first.

IE10 has the best web filter of any browser. See McLovin, MalwareDoctor reviews, and this from NSS Labs - https://www.nsslabs.com/reports/browser-security-comparative-analysis-socially-engineered-malware

As for AV's, Avast looks good, Forticlient 5.0 is world class, Bitdefender Free protection is excellent but has mixed opinions on useability - at least on here, and there's always MSE which, if you believe Microsoft, adjusts MSE to protect against the most widespread and common infections which are actually live and can run on a machine. MSE has few to zero false positives, plays well with other software. Ok, off my soapbox.

I loved NOD 32 v 2.7. In fact when they departed from this design philosophy; I departed from Eset. In my personal and unsubstantiated opinion, their quality went downhill from that point on.

With that being said you really need to try what works well on your system. Since you seem to like the old "if it works why change it" type program you might want to run a trial of Ikarus AV. Its as traditional of a AV as you can get these days and they do it very well (great support too).

Avast V8 or CIS 6 or 2 very good free options.

So did I. :D - But later versions .. not so much anymore.

I think that is only true for his signature which is probably still from 2005. :D
If people are using signatures they should update it else it leads only to confusion. ;)

I am to lazy for this so I have no signature. :)

The choice of AV depends on your machine & your usage pattern.
You must find how your computer is running with a new AV. The way to find it is to run trial versions. You must also take into account the nature of sites you visit - surely I won't elaborate on this.

lot of great suites just try anyone of it and go with it as far dectection .......etc almost all Av are pretty much same now days 98% + detection rate

so far my experiance is with KIS and NIS pretty good for trouble free experiance and very good detection rate over all very good complete suites

avast is also one of gem i have used light and fast good detection rate sandbox in paid one

zone alarm + antivirus free another good gem it use kaspersky engine but ram hungry if you can live with that :)

bitdefender i didnt use new one so cannot much comment on it expect one of great detection rate but i cannot say about stabilty.

avira another gem product on detection but stability again issue in some cases.

out of all i suggest you try KIS (kaspersky internet security) if you want a change form nod32 and going for paid one

why i choose kaspersky because of stability and good detection rate i have used kaspersky form long time on PC's without problem.

only bad thing is kaspersky too strict on key activation so dont uninstall and reinstall your OS or during uninstall reinstall KIS keep (save) activation before uninstalling it never give you problem or your key or you get blacklisted

another solution is make a key file and use it :)

at end choose what suits you best

Gosh, competition forces all those type of programs to be so excellent these days. Even a recent issue of PCWorld which compared the "suites" rated most of them, not all, but most of them so close together it simply does not matter much what you choose.

Also, I don't know what other protection you have on your system. For example on my system, which is protected by a sandbox AND a virtual machine AND a HIPS program, I simply went with MSE because it was free and I could simply forget about it. I know that there are better av then MSE but it depends upon your other protection what you really need. Some folks, even here at Wilders, remove their av due to their other protection but I say if you have the programming power, and most modern pcs do, why allow all that RAM and processor power to just sit there and go to waste? What better way to use all that power than security programs? Why not add an av to the mix as long as they all play nicely together?

Just another opinion to throw into the murky mix,

Nicely done. I was almost convinced by your pleading to install right now any AV bloatware on my quadcore just to use it properly! :D

Most people seem to take tests and detection rates seriously and in this respect comodo antivirus is not as strong as avast .

Have you thought of a different way of looking at security ? If you can start using programs like Sandboxie or appguard or ( defencewall 32 bit only )
Then the choice of which AV becomes less relevant.
There are many layered combinations to consider. Your main defence appears up until now to be just an AV.
Once you look into programs like Sandboxie, an anti virus program becomes just an added layer. :)

ESET is one of few that I gladly pay for to use. And if there is a threat lurking on a site then most of the times can't even access the site since the URL blocker blocks the connection. Or the web scanner stops the bad parts on the site from loading like an AD for example.

And as others have said if you are happy with ESET, it doesn't cause any problems for you, and you want your PC to continue to have great system performance, then why change? :)

That would be bad (= not satisfying) if you are a YouTester. :D

Maybe so you have even BETTER than only great system performance? :D

Honestly, I don't think that system performance of ESET is so exceptional great from what I recently read about it. - But if it is fast enough for the OP I agree he could simply use it in the years to come. It's one choice of many. ;)
