I managed to create a SysRescue CD but I have some questions that I hope can be answered.

    ESS v6.0.306 x64 updated from v5 by live installer on Window 7 -sp1 x64

The CD could not be created from my x64 install or from the x64 MSI installer. In order to create the CD I had to download the x32 MSI installer.

Why couldn't the CD be created from the installed Eset directory?

After booting from the CD a pop up advises me that the CD is not activated. Clicking this allows me to go to the activation screen which already has my User info. Clicking to activate ends in failure.

Does the CD have to be activated ? If so how?

The last successful update is shown as 2/6/2106

    Is this correct?

The CD Virus Signature Database version is shown as 7732 (20121126)

Attempting to update produces "Update ended in Failure"

Will this SysRescue disk provide any assistance in recovering from an infection with the out dated Virus Database version?

    Stan

I have also noticed that the version 6 sysrescue states it is not activated. version 5 sysrescue never had that. what connection method are you using? only ethernet is supported. I created sysrescue 6 using windows 7 64bit as well.
I would say that only an updated version would be truly useful.

I think the activation issue is causing the update issue and hope eset solve that soon.

    Hello,

The ESET SysRescue discs built with V5 use the 32-bit version of the operating system. This is why you need to download a 32-bit version of the ESET Smart Security .MSI package when creating an ESET SysRescue disc.

When you created the ESET SysRescue disc, did you specify Installation Folder/MSI File or Update Folder as the source for the virus signature database?

I am unsure of why you were prompted to activate the ESET SysRescue disc, but am wondering if it might be related to the date? Was the clock on the system that made the disc set to the year 2106?

    Regards,

    Thanks for replying.

I made the SysRescue CD with version 6.0.306.

The Virus Signature Database Nup Files Location: ESS/EAVfolderMSI file
(This is chosen for me. I don't know where the update folder is to browse for it.)

Shortly after starting the CD there is a popup similar to notification of database update advising that Eset has not been Activated and when pressed a screen opens with my User name and password already there but activation fails.

    The system clock is correct.

I have attached a screen capture of the SysRescue set up that I used. My User Name has been blocked out for this screen shot.

I would really like to find out if the SysRescue disk, created as described in my earlier post, is going to be of any use.

I don't want to have a false sense of security about the CD only to have it fail if needed.

Is this the correct place to post this inquiry or should I do something different?

I have a slightly different problem making the SysRescue environment, no matter how many times I've tried, in Windows 8 the rescue.exe and dll are not installed, they are installed on my Windows 7 systems though.

I used the online installer to download the installer and copied that out of the temp folder for future installs (couldn't at that time see where to download offline installers, but have now), the W8 installs were from this installer. My W8's are VHDs booted off of a Windows 7 system, if that makes any difference.

    Hello,

ESET SysRescue is not currently available under Microsoft Windows 8, due to changes in Windows 8's WADK.

Please create ESET SysRescue discs under Microsoft Windows 7 to create a disc capable of scanning a Windows 8 system.

Support for creating ESET SysRescue discs under Windows 8 will be added in a forthcoming release.

    Regards,

    Aryeh Goretsky

I've always been confused about the SysRescue CD.
I don't think I will ever need it. Correct me if I am wrong.
I use Clonezilla-live to back up my computer regularly.
It has served me well in the past. So why would I need SysRescue?
Don't they duplicate the same thing??

clonezilla is an image backup application.
sysrescue is a boot-able antivirus scanner. they are completely different products.

if you found out your computer was infected you could restore a clean image using clonezilla.

A rescue cd-rom is very handy when a computer is infected with ransomware. I had to clean a laptop with a very nasty variant, unable to boot in safe mode. A back-up can also be infected, so you risk to restore an infected image. But restoring an image is quicker.

Eset stores the update files in the ProgramData (or Application data when you are using a windows version prior than Windows Vista), ESET,Eset Smart Security, updfiles and also in the continuous subfolder. Type this in the command prompt %systemdrive%\ProgramData\ESET\Eset Smart Security\updfiles\

    Niels,

Thanks for the reply and information.

The bad news is, I'm still not sure if I have a good CD.

The good news is, if it isn't good I now have a set of four which will make nice lawn mower hub caps.

Running the Windows 8 64-bit disaster.
    3 partitions

You all have convinced me that I need a SysRescue CD. That's
all fine and good but I doubt I will be able to create one. I tried
awhile back and had no success. Is there a detailed tut that I
    can use as a guide?

Try installing AIK for Windows 7 on Windows 8. You should be able to create a rescue cd then.

I dumped Windows 8 today and reinstalled Window7 pro 64-bit.
I have no idea what "AIK" is.

    Hello Shankle

The AIK, or sometimes seen as waik, stands for, windows automated installation Kit and is basically a set of deployment tools, that is supporting the latest release of Windows, and is needed for Sysrescue to be able to boot up before your main Os. There are other alternatives, like " Hiren’s BootCD 15.2" a very strong set of tools, or this little but vey nifty/useful tool " HitmanPro.Kickstart" .

    Cheers, Janus :)

    Thank you Janus for helping.
I am not familiar with any of the products you mentioned.
I went on the Microsoft site and the articles about the
Windows automated instruction kit are old, confusing
and there is a new one out called waik.
I am running Windows 7 pro with sp1.
Is SysRescue really worth all this troubleo_O??

    Hey Shankle

mmh let me say it this way, and this is just my point of view. Sysrescue is a great tool in your arsenal . But personly I use Hiren's BootCD and The Trinity Rescue Kit, (mostly for those in our gaming group, my friends, that need a little help to rescue important personal files, you know, pictures and so on). The advice I give to my friends, after an infection, is actually to forget all about rescue CDs, and get themself a strong solid image software. Then it becomes so more easier to save the day, if you are so unfortunate to be hit by malware. My own choices regarding image software, is Paragon, e.g. if you got an infection just press F1 under the boot up, and wupti the systems is restored. But just ask the forum, if you need to know more about image software, there are some real hardcore guys here, who know a lot about this issue. But if you really want a very easy, but the same time strong boot cd/usb, then I would go for hitmanpro kickstart. (Just a side note, as already suggested, a linux based Sysrescue disk will be much easier to handle, for the average user imho.)

    Take care, :))
