Yes. Whether real or imagined, they provide a degree of security that I am not (yet) willing to go without.
What does AV do? It slows down overall performance and in return gives a false feeling of security. Windows with UAC enabled and a sandboxed browser is more than enough.
I disagree that AV is useless and for example my son downloaded some game crap for Xbox and picked up a trojan packed in the mix,Bitdefender sprung in to action and deleted it.However I do agree that sanboxie is more then enough to keep a clean system but just not pratical for all. I dont like running them my self and they can make a system sluggish but I have kids and a Anti Virus is a practical solution.I find Bitdefender Anti Virus seems to provide good protection with minimal impact. That said on my Sony Vaio with windows 8, I use Windows Defender only and Norton DNS along windows firewall + Firewall router.
i voted no. i hate those things with a passion. i haven't run any real-time scanners in about 5 years now. i just scan what i download with Hitman Pro and VirusTotal or Jotti's web scanners. i got NoScript to fight the Barbarians at the gates.
I hate to say it but the feeling I get when a person makes a comment like this is that they probably haven't used an AV in a very very long time. Things have changed you see
Indeed true, because my avast! real-time doesn't slow my system down at all...good memory consumption, no cpu spikes and the disk I/O is really low. Today's antivirus software don't really bloat the system anymore.
There are exploits that can take take advantage of common sense so you could be in for a rough ride at some point in the future.
No real timer. I have a few reasons why I feel better and safer not using one. The most important of those reasons are: 1) I want SBIE to be at its best and for that to be the case, I need to avoid conflicts with other software. The only way to be 100% certain that there is no conflict is by not using anything else along SBIE, 2) By not using an antivirus, I avoid updates or upgrades that can go wrong, all antiviruses have one of those sometimes. Upgrading an AV suffocates me a little. I don't see antiviruses as useless, if a computer is shared or if a lot of programs are being installed then certainly a real time antivirus belongs in the computer. This is not my case. Bo
Well, at the moment I am using one. I have UAC disabled - I've always hated it, and have never used any sandboxing programs. In the past I've usually had absolutely zero real time protection, and the only security software I've used has been Malwrebytes for very occasional scans.
