70% of all statistics are made up.

What a nonsense claim. I have used registry cleaners for decades, over thousands of PC's and never once had an issue. I use them almost daily on nearly a half dozen PC's, never a problem. Bullguard contains a built in registry cleaner and defragger, never a problem. I actually use 3-4 registry products in a row, then defrag it, and have done so for many years.

Fact is, registry cleaners work, and are perfectly safe to use. BUT I would skip this product, it has a poor rep.

I have just pretty much registry cleaner ever written including all the registry cleaners which are part of utility suites, and more that 99% of them have problems with false positives - which is to say they will in some cases indentify some valid and needed registry keys as being errors.

I make this statement based on actually checking the found errors to check for false positives - not just blindly deleting all "errors" found and then making sure my computer still works properly.

No you haven't - registry cleaners have only been around for about 15 years. JV's RegCleaner (which went on to beomce JV16 PowerTools) and is more than likely the first registry cleaner, was written in 1998.

I've had plenty of problems caused by registry cleaners, even making Windows unbootable.

Not so. The truth is that registry cleaners rarely work. I know what I'm talking about - I've used registry cleaners hundreds, if not thousands of times. I've only come accross three cases where cleaning the registry fixed any problems, and only one case where there was a noticalbe performance increased after cleaning the registry.

I fix computers which are running slowly or are having problems with crashes or errors nearly every day. Sometimes I do a registry clean on these computers - and always without excpetion the computer runs no better or faster after cleaning the registry.

Your claim about registry cleaners being safe to use, in general is also simply not true. There are a few registry cleaners which are safe to use, all the rest are unsafe, and can cause problems - unless you are preprared to manually go through the found errors and uncheck any registry keys which should not be deleted.

If you use one of the safe registry cleaners, it is highy unlikely you will do any harm by cleaning the registry. However, on the other hand it is also highly unlikely that cleaning the registry will fix any problems or make your computer run faster.

Can you provide detailed testing, and logs of this or is this just based on your 'feel'? I love these kinds of comments because they make people look silly. For example everyone says XYZ AV is fast, but when you put a DPC and/or AppTimer on it, they suddenly find out it's not nearly as fast. "Feel" is very subjective, but doesn't lend a lot to facts.

Also, if you expect magical performance boosts during normal windows operation, then you don't really understand what the registry is in the first place. At the very least a tight, defragged, optimized registry might shave a second off booting. Additionally it can help reduce system errors or instabilities by keeping offensive, long removed trash out, such as removing incorrect file associations, and other data.

Of what? The lack of performance increase, or the false positives?

My comments regarding the lack of performance are based on "feel" and not benchmarks. Doing benchmarks seems kind of pointless to me, when the computer appears to be running no faster at all after doing mutiple registry cleans followed by a registry defrag and reboot. A benchmark may show a miniscule performance increase - but that really does not matter if it is so insignificant that it is not noticable at all.

I did do benchmarks once, before and after cleaning thousands of errors from the regsitry. From memory, there was no significant difference in the before and after results.

I don't see how any of what I have said is making me look silly. You are the one who has made the dubious claims that registry cleaners work and are safe to use.

I'm not expecting any performance boost from cleaning the registry. I thought that you were, as you made the suprising claim that registry cleaners work!

This has not been my experience - I've cleaned the registry thousands of times on countless computers and there have been only three instances where any problems have been fixed by cleaning the registry. Sure, a lot of unneeded data gets left in the registry over time. But for most part it does not matter at all.

I must clarify that I meant the computer runs no faster after cleaning the registry.

    exactly

I tried that stupid reg cleaner once in BullGuard IS and it made my Office 2010 corrupt. When I ran Word it showed me the installing dialogue box as if it were reinstalling it or something then it worked after a couple of minutes.

let him enjoy his snake oil I dont trust anything that guy uses or does

cleaning the registry has been proven here in another thread to be worthless, offers no benefits, if only, it may offer problems such as programs not working or Windows not booting

he is installing reg cleaners since decades. ROFLMAO

Yeah even the registry cleaner is safe to use eyes closed. It's not that thorough. But then again, thorough registry cleaning is risky if you're not experienced enough. So no Win booster for me. Only Ccleaner.:D:thumb:

Luckily I have already overcame years where I wanted to have as thorough registry and files cleaning as possible. It always ended up in screwed computer and starting from the scratch. So the lesson learnt, I rather will have less aggressive cleaning than having dead PC :D

CCleaner's registry cleaner can cause problems unless you disable the scan for obsolete software entries.

Registry cleaning is only risky with an unsafe registry cleaner. With a safe registry cleaner, the chance of deleting something that is needed very close to zero.

What is Real Time System Protection? I just saw this option believe it or not and I have been a NOD32 user for 2 years. I enabled it but I'm wondering, what does it really do? Shall I keep it enabled or is it useless and would just slow my system down?

Some of you people are unbelievable around here.

Obviously I hit a soft spot, but my point was, some of us actually do this for a living, and have for decades.

    Others? Likely not.

But that is OK, as long as we don't 'pretend' to be a PC Tweaker and exper!, right? If anything, you should be the one to go find somewhere else to torment, you aren't well liked, or respected here. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Since we seem to be on the topic of giving others advice; Your problem is really the ego, you have a giant ego that constantly needs stroking, and to feel important. Let me give you a tip that will save you a lot of grief in the future, as you are obviously a young man at this time, karma will catch up and re-balance, it always does.. Lose the ego, don't feed it, it's a monster that will overcome you, and eventually take you down with it. The constant need to feel important, to be right, and to disparage others is a disastrous path that leads only to self destruction. Spend some time studying philosophy or theology, and less time worrying about AV's, it will go a long way in life.

Why don't you two make a campfire, roast some marshmallows and engage in a drunken sing-along of Kumbaya? World problems can be solved this way :D

As to registry cleaners, they mean nothing these days. Back in the days of easily corrupted registries they could help at times, now you're just cleaning out harmless junk. It's leftover drivers and such that cause problems, not old registry entries.
